I think there is something to the whole visibility question when it comes to certain issues, but not others.  Not every paradigm is extensible.  When you have a melting pot situation for example as in New York, people from very different cultures living side by side who are exposed to each other's habits and traditions are a bit weirded out at first, but become good neighbors over time.

I'm not sure that model extends in all areas though.  When it comes to such a rare occurrence as this transsexual condition, which to me is simply a case of biological variance at birth, the answer isn't quite so clear as the immigrant example.  With immigrants the threshold for understanding is much lower, and the goal of mutual understanding is shared by both parties.  Everyone acknowledges some basic commonalities to being human and time will settle the matter.

That was quite an interesting viewpoint.

Until now, I've been ready to accept the different approaches. Though I ideintified with the integrated set.

The piece is, however, one viewpoint, based upon a specific perspective.

The response from leighspov is interesting and based upon a common notion. I wonder how all embracing it is, however?

Just read another essay on that site.

The issues raised are a can of worms. But I can't help get the feeling that the objective is division.

Surely the objective is freedom of self expression? Is there any reason why someone, identifying as a woman, can't wear trousers?

I get the feeling that this woman has a lot to contribute to society and to those of us, within society, affected by issues of standardised gender.

But I also get the sneeking feeling that I'm being continually pushed into making a judgement. A judgement of others, in comparison to myself.

That's a little disturbing. Do we like being disturbed, occasionally?
