Smell change when going on T - does your dog compute it?

Heya,

I'm posting for a friend of mine now. He will go on Testo in about one year and worries how his dog will get along with the change of his smell. I have to add that his dog does not like men in general, and he did not like me any more after I went on T and became amiable to me again after I went off T. Moreover, his dog is quite old now and his hearing and ear-sight get worse and worse, but he may well live for another couple of years.

Will his dog recognize him if he goes on T?
Is it better for my friend to start with low-dose treatment and increase the dose slowly because of his dog?

What are your experiences as dog-holders?

I am interested in the answers to this thread. I have two cats who clearly see me as "mom" and I worry they won't like me any more once I start T.

Hey man, great question, I thought about this also considering I have a dog. I have been on T for about 10 weeks and my dog recognizes me 100%. IDK if theres still part of you that smells the same or what. Also idk how accurate this will be considering I am only 10 weeks. (also i started on a normal level of T)

The changes might be small from day to day so your dog might adapt, idk any science behind it tho.

also there are a bunch of guys on Youtube who have dogs they are really close to pre t and while on T. so i dont think your friend should worry

Oh, my friend has three cats as well. So let me expand the question to cats.

I'm still looking for other feed-back as well though.

Hey man I have 2 dogs and a cat who could care less that I'm on T lol I'm a little over a year on testosterone now and they havent acted any different toward me at all. I also have a cat at my mom's house who I've havd since I was 9. I only get to go over there a couple times a month because my family live about 2 hours away from me, and he know exactly who I am. He is stuck to my side from the time I walk in the door until the time I leave, the same way he has been since I was a little kid. one of my friend had gotten a new dog though right before I started T, I had only met her once and she didn't seem to mind me. I met her again about 4 months later and she was scared of me and wanted nothing to do to me. So I don't know if it's the amount that you're around the animal or what, but I would assume your friend will be fine because it will be a gradual change to the dog.

My son just came home to visit this week....he has been on T for about 10 weeks now ... most of the time it's been since he went to school....the dogs all seemed to remember him and love him just the same.

Kind of related. I have a pet rabbit and it seems to like me more now, but I think that's due to my being less anxious/nervous/depressed. It didn't stop recognizing me.

Thank you very much for your answers.

Cause I did not know if testo smell is stronger than other individual smells so I did not know if dogs (and cats) can figure out they still have the same master or partner.

Thanks for your input!

I've had no problems at all with my cats. In fact one cat has become obsessed with smelling my armpits then sticking her head right in them. :D She's always done this but does it even more now. BTW she's an attention whore and will do anything to get you to pet her.

I think pets pick-up your new smell but get used to it and know it's still you. However, I don't know about all dogs. I myself have wonder what would happen concerning a dog who hates and fears men.

My Dad's dog doesn't treat me any differently, but she's a Lab and likes everybody anyway. :)

None of my pets seemed to notice anything; at least they never acted any differently towards me in any way.  I have a cat and dogs.

haha my cats do this, it's so weird. Love nothing more than to snuggle up in my armpit.

I'm glad to read that pets generally don't change when a person goes on T.  I have a dog who is my life and if she started to not like me because of T, I would stop T just to keep her happy and to keep her liking me (but, like I said, she is my life and I doubt I could live without her).

Lets expand this issue to cover horses.  I have one that isn't the best of friends with a lot of guys.  She doesn't like my dad.  But she's ok with Nick (the new gayboy farrier), she's never had a problem with the old farrier, or my friend DJ.  Mostly, just my dad.    .. Maybe it's just a 'my dad' issue.  I don't like him all that much either.

Anyways, anyone have any experience with how horses take the t change?  My assessment is done thursday, so to be honest, I could be in getting my blood tests and script as early as this friday.  :-D

I've certainly had the opposite problem with a horse, namely that back in the days when I used to take premarin (which of course contains equine estrogens) there was a particular stallion that I had to be VERY cautious around because he would act VERY strange near me.

So I would say, yes animals definitely can smell hormonal differences in us.

I think they can smell the difference but the animals I have seem to judge who I am based on how I look I don't however know any dogs.

There are some stray cats in my neightbourhood and I'm generally kind to them feeding them scraps and petting them, they didn't seem bothered by my starting HRT they did sniff me at first noting the difference but seemed as happy as ever to see me I think they locate me based on my hair and voice.
I think this because they don't follow me or notice me initally if I wear my hair up and they don't respond to there name when I call them anymore.

But then alot of humans also have that problem too it seems >_<
"Oh I didn't recognise you, you've changed alot."

Edit: There was an FTM who has annoyingly taken down there youtube video of the story but basically.

A friend of this FTM's Mother told them they were going on holiday and needed a dogsitter the mother begin a drooling moron said "Oh my daughter can do that" the FTM having been on T for 5 months great she thought. And she left having met the FTM guy once but she didn't know anything about T or what it dose and she failed to mention that the dog was previously abused by a man.

He gose over to take care of the dog and the dog is Terrified of him barking wetting itself and hiding in the house until he leaves. He was conveying this story and how bad he feels for the dog and how angry at his mum he was for putting him in that situation.

@pebbles
Interesting thing with your hair, and I'm sorry for the guy with the frightened dog.

Don't forget, the dog I talk about is quite old, mentally as flexible as an anvil welded on the floor, and his hearing and sight are bad.
