Legal Gender Change: A Fait Accompli?

Is there anybody here who went to Thailand or something, and came back a different gender, and then changed their legal gender?  Did they still make you get the notes and all, or did that just accept that it was a fait accompli and grant it?
It's easier to change your sex and gender in Iran, than it is in the United States.  Way easier.
