LAS CRUCES - Like any other nearly 62-year-old man on the planet, Jamison Green looks a little different than he used to. His hairline is receding. His beard is graying. He's less lean than when he was on the high school ski team, or when he worked as a construction cable splicer.

Oh, and for many years, this husband and father of two had a female body - albeit one he rebelled against as a baby, rejecting dresses before he was even 2.

"People don't have to be afraid of trans people," said Green, a transgender advocate since 1989 and the author of "Becoming a Visible Man." "Trans people aren't as scary as you might think. We're just ordinary people who have a particular struggle in life."

Green said most people's discomfort stems from a deep-seated need to identify others as man or woman, and treat them appropriately.
