Transgender speaker: 'Don't be afraid'

His hairline is receding. His beard is graying. He's less lean than when he was on the high school ski team, or when he worked as a construction cable splicer.
Oh, and for many years, this husband and father of two had a female body - albeit one he rebelled against as a baby, rejecting dresses before he was even 2.

"People don't have to be afraid of trans people," said Green, a transgender advocate since 1989 and the author of "Becoming a Visible Man." "Trans people aren't as scary as you might think. We're just ordinary people who have a particular struggle in life."
Green said most people's discomfort stems from a deep-seated need to identify others as man or woman, and treat them appropriately.
