Does anyone know what test it is that is used to check hormone levels? My local hospital said they might be able to work with me on bloodwork price but they need to know exactly what tests I will need. Thanks :)

Sean

What is the purpose of the test? Is it your pre-T "let's make sure everything is ok and get baselines" test?

If so, you might need things like your liver function, kidney function, hemoglobin, cholesterol, etc. - things beyond testing the standard hormone production/level.

You probably should ask the prescribing doctor or clinic what tests are needed.

Sean: Yeah, it is the pre-T tests. My doctor can't see me until January but the issue is my insurance will cost me $75 per month for the next 3 months until I see because I have to have insurance just to set an appointment her plus $75 copay plus any bloodwork that I will need as well as any other fees that are thrown in. So it will cost me at least $300 before bloodwork. If I pay cash I get a cash discount and can get the lab to work with me. However I'm trying to find out if it will be cheaper for my mother to pay cash.

I didn't get my loans which means I can't afford insurance until February. Basically if I can find out what I need now I can decide if it is best to just pay cash. I need to know what tests I need now though so I can tell my mother how much she needs to set aside because she says she can't wait to know until January. I can't get my doctor on the phone and the receptionist tells me she doesn't know what is needed.

Maybe 'Total Hormone Panel" with a Liver test.

I know I was tested for total testosterone, estradiol, cholesterol, sedimentation rate, lipid panel, liver and kidney function (can't remember test name), prolactin, and red and white blood cell counts. Along with several others that I can't remember - needed 5 vials of blood drawn to test them all. Maybe my doctor was just very thorough, but there are definitely a ton of them. And unfortunately very expensive. I can investigate all of the tests if you're sure you want to get them on your own, but I'd recommend talking to an actual endo instead.

Nikolai- thanks man. I'll get a price list on those :) I'm going to be seeing my doctor to see exactly what she wants in January then she'll send me to the lab. I just have to get a rough cost estimate for now so that my mom can put the cash aside and so that I can find out what my local hospital will help me pay for. They have a program to help cover lab costs for people with little to no income but cannot help me get an estimate on what they can pay for until I know what tests. I just don't want my mom to set aside $200 and then find out I need $400.

Today however she has me reconsidering. She told me that if I wait an extra month until she gets tax money she will pay for me to see the doctor, get the bloodwork, start T, and she will pay for my name change. I don't think my therapist will be happy but if it was you, would ya'll wait the extra month?
