Megan Quigley felt most lonely on the day she chopped off her hair for work.

Quigley, a transgender woman who worked in food service, had just started to live as a female and grow her hair long. Then, she got the edict to bring it up above the collar. In an emotional fit – "It wasn't my best moment in life" – she hacked off six inches of locks, even more than needed.

"It made me feel really alienated and just alone," Quigley said of the emotional shoring. "Because no one really got what it meant for me to cut my hair really short."
