Does a clitoral release count as SRS? Because I REAALLYYY don't want SRS but it's required in my state to change your birth certificate and drivers license.

There are plenty of ways to game most systems. You need to talk to the PTBs and find out exactly what kind of evidence they require for the documentation change. If you need a letter, find out what wording is required. If you only need to have "irreversible genital surgery," or something of that nature, then find a surgeon who has no problems with writing such a letter.

I see my hormone doctor on the 3rd (I think. This office is bad at explaining what to expect with each visit XD I'm kind of just rolling with it right now) And I intend to ask her. When I find anything out, I'll make a new topic if this one dies out (which it probably will, since it's not a hot press topic, just to us Virginians )

Arch, I've seen one place quote genital reassignment surgery, and another quote irreversible surgery. I'm not sure which source is more recent, but I'm hoping the irreversible one is, because that would be easier to get around, with the clitoral release or hysto.

12 VAC. 5-550-320. Change of Sex.

Except as provided in 12VAC 5-550-450-C upon presentation of acceptable
evidence (preoperative diagnosis, postoperative diagnosis and description of
procedure), and a notarized affidavit from the physician performing the surgery,  a new
certificate of birth may be prepared by the State Registrar for a person born in this
Commonwealth whose sex has been changed by surgical gender reassignment
procedure. A certified copy of the court order changing the name of the registrant as
well as designating the sex of the registrant must be in the possession of the State
Registrar together with a request that a new certificate be prepared.

Well, the new security regulations require penis sizes of all citizens to be on file, and they will be used to check ID via groping at airports.

Lilac, I'm not sure it's an issue of national security, more the fact that as long as being trans has been around, it's still new to the general public, and especially new to the law systems (in comparison with other laws). The understanding of transsexuals as a whole is spreading, many laws have been changed in our favor over the last ten years regarding changing official documents. VA only started offering amendments for gender on your birth certificate in 2003, so it could possibly be simple ignorance thinking that penis=man and vagina=woman and only surgery can bring this about.

My state of birth won't change the birth certificate at all, no matter what you do.

I can't complain too much. My state of residence is fairly liberal about licenses.

I have read that top surgery is supposed to be sufficient for FTMs, just as this link suggests. But you'll need to find out the specific guidelines in your state. Call 'em up and see what color smoke comes out. It's the only way to be sure.
