Inspired by LostInTime's thread "A Bit of My Life, in Songs" and a similar thread on another board I frequent.

This can be a conversation about anything, as long as you use song lyrics.

I'll start:

"Can somebody please just explain to me
What happened to the way that we always said we'd be?
Right now I don't know why I pushed through the pain that I got through
 And I'm losing hope --
Give me one reason not to."

"You Are Loved (Don't Give Up)"
By josh groban

Don't give up
It's just the weight of the world
When you're heart's heavy
I...I will lift it for you

Don't give up
Because you want to be heard
If silence keeps you
I...I will break it for you

Everybody wants to be understood
Well I can hear you
Everybody wants to be loved
Don't give up
Because you are loved

Don't give up
It's just the hurt that you hide
When you lost inside
I...I will be there to find you

Don't give up
Because you want to burn bright
If darkness blinds you
I...I will shine to guide you

Everybody wants to be understood
Well I can hear you
Everybody wants to be loved
Don't give up
Because you are loved
You are loved

Don't give up
It's just the weight of the world
Don't give up
Every one is to be heard
You are loved

Queensryche, I Don't Believe in Love

"No chance for contact
There's no raison d'etre
My only hope is one day I'll forget
The pain of knowing what can never be
With or without love it's all the same to me

I don't believe in love
I never have, I never will
I don't believe in love
I'll just pretend she never was real
I don't believe in love
I need to forget her face, I see it still
I don't believe in love
It's never worth the pain that you feel"

Angel
Sarah McLachlan

Spend all your time waiting
for that second chance
for a break that would make it okay
there's always some reason
to feel not good enough
and it's hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction
oh beautiful release
memories seep from my veins
let me be empty
oh and weightless then maybe
I'll find some peace tonight

In the arms of the angel
fly away from here
from this dark cold hotel room
and the endlessness that you feel
you are pulled from the wreckage
of your silent reverie
you're in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort here

So tired of the straight line
and everywhere you turn
there's vultures and thieves at your back
the storm keeps on twisting
you keep on building the lies
that you make up for all that you lack
it don't make no difference
escaping one last time
it's easier to believe
in this sweet madness oh
this glorious sadness that brings me to my knees

In the arms of the angel
fly away from here
from this dark cold hotel room
and the endlessness that you feel
you are pulled from the wreckage
of your silent reverie
you're in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort here
you're in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort here

Nightwish, Wish I Had an Angel

"I wish I had an angel
For one moment of love
I wish I had your angel
Tonight

Deep into a dying day
I took a step outside an innocent heart
Prepare to hate me fall when I may
This night will hurt you like never before

Old loves they die hard
Old lies they die harder

I wish I had an angel
For one moment of love
I wish I had your angel
Your Virgin Mary undone
I'm in love with my lust
Burning angelwings to dust
I wish I had your angel tonight

I'm going down so frail 'n cruel
Drunken disguise changes all the rules

Old loves they die hard
Old lies they die harder

I wish I had an angel
For one moment of love
I wish I had your angel
Your Virgin Mary undone
I'm in love with my lust
Burning angelwings to dust
I wish I had your angel tonight

Greatest thrill
Not to kill
But to have the prize of the night
Hypocrite
Wannabe friend
13th disciple who betrayed me for nothing!

"They told me time is a healer,
Healing hearts still bleed.
But there's not one glimmer of hope,
And so I sing my song.
This is my lullaby for love,
And I hope it will never wake up,
This is my last goodnight kiss,
To save me always from my tears."

Wishing my life away.  by Cindi Jones

The days are countin down
No more messin round
In that time I'll be found
doing the inevitable.

Am I wishin my life away
wantin this thing but still stay
focused on what must be done today?

Time clicks by so slowly
The seconds seem like minutes
and the minutes seem like hours
Bla bla bla, you've heard it before.

But can I say the interum is
precious to me?
Can it be that I just can't see
beyond this thing that just can't be?

Hello darkness, my old friend,
Ive come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of
A neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one deared
Disturb the sound of silence.

Fools said i,you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you.
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon God they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the signs said, the words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls.
And whisperd in the sounds of silence.

The rock anthem by Tom Scholtz (Boston) presents the sad wailing many of us have experienced. Who would have known how his words would have been taken:

If I said what's on my mind
You'd turn and walk away
Disappearing way back in your dreams
It's so hard to be unkind
So easy just to say
That everything is just the way it seems

You look up at me
And somewhere in your mind you see
A man I'll never be

If only I could find a way
I'd feel like I'm the man you believe I am
It's getting harder every day for me
To hide behind this dream you see
A man I'll never be

I can't get any stronger
I can't climb any higher
You'll never know just how hard I've tried
Cry a little longer
And hold a little tighter
Emotions can't be satisfied

You look up at me
And somewhere in your mind you still see
A man I'll never be

If only I could find a way
I'd feel like I'm the man you believe I am
And it gets harder every day for me
I can't hide this feeling

Three songs that describe my life and my thoughts.... edited for content...

Hey do what you want, but don't do it around me.
Idleness and dissipation breed apathy.
I sit on my ass all goddamn day,
A misanthropic anthropoid with nothing to
Say what you must, do all you can,
Break all the [bleeping] rules and
Go to Hell with Superman and
Die like a champion, yeah hey!
Hey I don't know if the billions will survive,
But I'll believe in God when 1 and 1 are 5.
My moniker is man and I'm rotten to the core.
I'll tear down the building just to pass through the door.
So do what you must, do all you can,
Break all the [Bleeping} rules and
Go to Hell with Superman and
Die like a champion, yeah hey!

Bad Religion, Do What You Want, Suffer Album

you don't know a thing about me, is there something that you should know?
I can tell you what you want to hear, let your inhibitions just go.
<Chorus> No!, you don't know what you will give up.  No!, you don't know what you will give up.
you don't know, what you want, it may take you years to find out.
you don't know, what you need, it's something that may never come to you. <end chorus>
trust is something that comes easy, when you've never been a victim.
Lies and promises and words are said, it's your decision to accept them.
<Repeat Chorus>

Disconected, Face to Face, Big Choice album

Enemy inside of me!

I'm caught! I cannot kick them out
Their claws are wrapped around my throat and they are squeezing tighter
Insanity is coming over me
Their every wish is my command
No way out!

I feed them, you will too!
They're gonna take control of you!
You'll know when they have got you trapped
Everything looks cloudy and you feel like you're on fire
Inhabited, I wish that I were dead
My blood has turned from red to black
No way out!

When they come for you
They see right through your flesh and bones for soon you'll be their home
They know you deep inside, the things you can't try to hide
No hope after the first bite

Look out 'cause they are onto you
They'll cut you open, crawl inside and you'll be lost forever
Don't try to run 'cause you're the chosen one
Your world is gone, no turning back
No way out!

Then after I get out of my Simon and Garfunkel low I listen and sing this (very loud).  Nothing like driving in my new car with this tune just blaring......

Artist/Band: Urban Keith
Lyrics for Song: Days Go By
Lyrics for Album: Be Here

I'm changing lanes an' talkin' on the phone,
An' drivin' way too fast.
An' the Interstate's jammed with gunners like me,
Afraid of coming in last.
But somewhere in the race we run,
We're comin' undone.

An' days go by:
I can feel 'em flying like a hand out the window in the wind.
The cars go by:
Yeah, it's all we've been given, so you better start livin' right now,
'As days go by.
Ooh, ooh.

Out on the roof just the other night,
I watched the world flash by.
Headlights, tail-lights runnin' through a river,
Of neon signs, mmm, mmm.
But somewhere in the rush I felt:
We're losing ourselves.

An' days go by:
I can feel 'em flying like a hand out the window in the wind.
The cars go by:
It's all we've been given, so you better start livin' right now,
An' days go by.
Oh yeah, ooh, ooh.
Yeah, the days go by, ooh, ooh.

We think about tomorrow,
Then it slips away, oh yes it does.
We talk about forever,
But we've only got today.

An' the days go by:
I can feel 'em flying like a hand out the window as the cars go by.
It's all we've been given, so you better start livin',
You better start livin',
Better start livin' right now
.

'Cause days go by:
I can feel 'em flying like a hand out the window in the wind.
The cars go by:
It's all we've been given, so you better start livin' right now,
As days go by.
Ooh, ooh,
Yeah, as days go by,
Ooh, ooh.

Oh, so take 'em by the hand, they're yours an' mine.
Take 'em by the hand an' live your life.
Take 'em by the hand, don't let them all fly by
C'mon, c'mon now.
Yeah, c'mon,
Ooh, ooh.

Don't you know that days go by.

Gill,
In my days of before transition I would listen to the sounds of silence in my home with a gun in my hands. Gosh, I haven't listened to that song since I took some pills instead of the gun. That song hit way too close to home with me. The other one was I'm a rock.

Okay okay here you go;  it's Christmas cheer-up.....

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple streudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad

I might have expected "A Most Peculiar Man"...but I'm glad the great music of Simon and Garfunkel has never meant anything as painful as that to me.  I'm also glad you've left that behind you.

In reply to Gill's Christmas cheer-up, here's some Christmas silliness!

The Night Santa Went Crazy
Weird Al Yankovic

Down in the workshop all the elves were makin' toys
For the good Gentile girls and the good Gentile boys
When the boss busted in, nearly scared 'em half to death
Had a rifle in his hands and cheap whiskey on his breath
From his beard to his boots he was covered with ammo
Like a big fat drunk disgruntled Yuletide Rambo
And he smiled as he said with a twinkle in his eye,
"Merry Christmas to all - now you're all gonna die!"

The night Santa went crazy
The night St. Nick went insane
Realized he'd been gettin' a raw deal
Something finally must have snapped in his brain

Well, the workshop is gone now, he decided to bomb it
Everywhere you'll find pieces of Cupid and Comet
And he tied up his helpers and he held the elves hostage
And he ground up poor Rudolph into reindeer sausage
He got Dancer and Prancer with an old German Luger
And he slashed up Dasher just like Freddy Krueger
And he picked up a flamethrower and he barbequed Blitzen
And he took a big bite and said, "It tastes just like chicken!"

The night Santa went crazy
The night Kris Kringle went nuts
Now you can't hardly walk around the North Pole
Without steppin' in reindeer guts

There's the National Guard and the F.B.I.
There's a van from the Eyewitness News
And helicopters circlin' 'round in the sky
And the bullets are flyin', the body count's risin'
And everyone's dyin' to know, oh Santa, why?
My my my my my my
You used to be such a jolly guy

Yes, Virginia, now Santa's doin' time
In a federal prison for his infamous crime
Hey, little friend, now don't you cry no more tears
He'll be out with good behavior in 700 more years
But now Vixen's in therapy and Donner's still nervous
And the elves all got jobs working for the postal service
And they say Mrs. Claus, she's on the phone every night
With her lawyer negotiating the movie rights

They're talkin' bout - the night Santa went crazy
The night St. Nicholas flipped
Broke his back for some milk and cookies
Sounds to me like he was tired of gettin' gypped

Wo, the night Santa went crazy
The night St. Nick went insane
Realized he's gettin' a raw deal
Something finally must have snapped in his brain
Wo, something finally must have snapped in his brain
Tell ya, something finally must have snapped... in his brain

All men have secrets and here is mine so let it be known
We have been through hell and high tide
I can surely rely on you
And yet you start to recoil
Heavy words are so lightly thrown
But I'd still leap in front of a flying bullet for you

So what difference does it make?
Oh, what difference does it make?
It makes none, but now you have gone
And your prejudice won't keep you warm tonight

"The River" by Garth Brooks

You know a dream is like a river
Ever changin' as it flows
And a dreamer's just a vessel
That must follow where it goes
Trying to learn from what's behind you
And never knowing what's in store
Makes each day a constant battle
Just to stay between the shores...and

I will sail my vessel
'Til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind
These waters are my sky
I'll never reach my destination
If I never try
So I will sail my vessel
'Til the river runs dry

Too many times we stand aside
And let the waters slip away
'Til what we put off 'til tomorrow
Has now become today
So don't you sit upon the shoreline
And say you're satisfied
Choose to chance the rapids
And dare to dance the tide...yes

I will sail my vessel
'Til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind
These waters are my sky
I'll never reach my destination
If I never try
So I will sail my vessel
'Til the river runs dry

There's bound to be rough waters
And I know I'll take some falls
But with the good Lord as my captain
I can make it through them all...yes

I will sail my vessel
'Til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind
These waters are my sky
I'll never reach my destination
If I never try
So I will sail my vessel
'Til the river runs dry

Yes, I will sail my vessel
'Til the river runs dry
'Til the river runs dry

Travelin Through - Dolly Parton

Well, I can't tell you where I'm going
I'm not sure of where I've been
But I know I must keep travelin'
Till my road comes to an end

I'm out here on my journey
Trying to make the most of it
I'm a puzzle I must figure out
Where all my pieces fit

Chorus

     Like a poor wayfairing stranger
That they speak about in song
     I'm just a weary pilgrim
Trying to find what feels like home

What that is, no one can tell me
Am I doomed to ever roam
     I'm just travelin' travelin' travelin'
     I'm just travelin' on.

Questions I have many
Answeers but a few
We're here to learn the spirit burns
To learn the greater truth

We've all been crusified
And they nailed Jesus to the tree
And when I'm born again
You're gonna see a change in me

God made me for a reason
     And nothing is in vain
     Redemption comes in many shapes
     With many kinds of pain

Oh, sweet Jesus if you're out there
Keep me ever close to you
     As I'm stumbling tumbling
     As I'm traveling through

I'm just traveling traveling traveling.
I'm just traveling through ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh.
I'm just traveling traveling
I'm just traveling through ooho ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh.

Oh sometimes the road gets rugged
And it's hard to travelin' on
But holdin' to each other
We don't have to work alone

When everything is broken
We can mend it if we try
We can make the world a difference
If we want to we can fly.

     Good-bye you little children
     Good-night you handsome men
     Farewell to all you ladies
And to all who knew me when...

And I hope I'll see ya down the road
You meant more than I knew
     As I'm travelin' travelin' travelin'
     I'm just travelin' through

Drifting like a floating boat
And roaming like the wind
Oh give me some direction lord
Let me lean on you
As I'm travelin' travelin' through (Repeat, Repeat)
Oooh-ooh-ooh-ooh

     Like the poor wayfaring stranger
That they speak about in song
I'm just like a weary pilgrim
Tryin' to find my own way home

Oh, sweet jesus if you're out there
Keep me ever close to you
     As I'm travelin' travelin' travelin'
     I'm just travelin' through

Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh travelin' through.
