in light of recent news articles, i figured i'd like to weigh in on the argument about whether transgender students belong at/harm the ideals of single sex institutions. cnn recently posted an article entitled, Male, female, or neither? Gender identity debate at same-sex colleges. and that is the main article i'm referring to, though i've re-read a few other articles in my own investigation of the issue, including the 2008 NYT article, When Girls Will Be Boys.
i guess the first thing that i'd like to mention is the point that many of these articles have been written from outsider perspectives; they are written either by people who have not attended women's colleges or people who have but are not transgender. one of the great struggles that people seem to have with the notion of ->-bleeped-<- is simply not understanding how it feels. like trying to explain to a colorblind person the experience of seeing color, it cannot be put to words easily; perhaps it cannot be put to words at all.
