Argh!!! I got a letter of denial from my tribes Financial Aid program! They have a policy that awards cannot exceed 5 semesters of school towards an Associates degree. The problem area lies over ten years ago when I was younger and did not care too much about my grades. My GPA took a dive which resulted in the loss of my scholarship back then. I moved away from home and lived in the city working minimum wage jobs and finally getting a stint in Job Corps. I completed the Job Corps training with certification as a Nurses Aide. Good experience for someone wanting to go further in the health professions but.....doesn't pay enough!
It is now a little over 10 years later and I have been taking classes the last four semesters. Three semesters part-time and just recently full-time. I am enrolled for the upcoming semester for 16 credit hours. I figure they are still counting those past attempts towards my current situation. I am going to appeal and have written a letter stating that I have maintained a satisfactory GPA (3.75) since I started school again and that I am asking for a reinstatement of eligibility. After the 10 year break I have been awarded for just this past fall. I paid for the other three semesters of school out of pocket and with what my parents could help with.
It is extremely difficult to get a job here! There aren't any! I live on the reservation and it really is a poverty society. If there are any jobs it then becomes a situation of "who you know" or "who you are related to" to get any kind of work. Distance to work is also a big problem for me. There are dirt roads which become extremely muddy and impassable in winter when the snow melts or when it rains. At this point I feel that I should dedicate a great deal of my time to maintaining a decent GPA- especially since I'll be taking 3 science courses w/labs this coming semester so a job would take away major study time!
I've come along way from living in the streets. I've come along way from not giving a crap about myself to actually buying presents for my family this year. My parents are in their upper 60's so I'm relied on for many many things on top of the school and studying. I'm tired and have school starting up in two weeks. I hope the appeals committee reinstates me! I just really needed this vent and if anyone can send me positive vibes I really need it!
I may have to put a hard earned SSD in my laptop up for sale if I my appeal does not go through
