TAXPAYERS have been landed with a staggering £78,000 bill after a transsexual won her legal battle for breast implants.

Cash-strapped health bosses insisted they could not afford to fork out for Miranda Lee's £8,000 breast enlargement operation and insisted she pay for it herself.

But Miss Lee, once Raymond Harwood, was celebrating yesterday after officials caved in.

A transsexual has won the right to have £8,000 breast implants – following a battle funded by £10,000 of legal aid.

Miranda Lee, 40, had gender realignment surgery costing £60,000 in 2009, paid for with NHS money.

The process was due to be completed with the breast augmentation, but she was then told the money would not be made available.

Hmm -  for those not in the UK the Daily Mail and Daily Express, which those two articles came from are politically somewhat to the right of Ghengis Khan and are mainly demographically aimed at slightly hysterical middle class housewives who like to think that the world is going to hell in a hand basket.

They tend to take stories which are bound to inflame the idea that the whole world is about to collapse in a sea of immorality, terrorism, sexual debauchery and ruin, and they always write them up to cast the stories in the worst possible light.  ::)

In my opinion such propaganda rags aren't even fit for use in the toilet! Happily most of the UK press is rather more responsible.

USA equivalents include NY Daily News, Washington Times, plus supermarket entertainment tabloids such as The Enquirer.

The only, very small consolation is that these two, along with a few others, will be competing wth each other for the next big scandal.

Still, nice to see our US brothers and sisters can get access the humour that is the Tabloid.

I'm inclined to say that the person should have been told to get rid of that fat male belly and then the natural boobs would have been perfectly acceptable.

That's pretty pricey, they could have sent the person to LA and got it done cheaper, airfare included.

yeah, but it's highly unlikely to have more than shred of truth in it.

Patient confidentiality laws in UK ensure no-one apart from NHS accountants knows the precise costs of surgeries this person has had and we all know that boob jobs and SRS are a fraction of that quoted so basically the paper has just multiplied the guesses by about 10 times and used that.
Even by getting lawyers to work wouldn't add much as they can't charge much for just writing letters threatening court action.

We will never see the papers inflate the costs of the belly banding that fat slobs get by 10 times as of course fat people musntn't be criticised for bad diets and lifestyles that need megabucks of public money to cure.

'FAT SLOB GETS £78K BELLY BAND!' would make a nice headline.

The unofficial state motto of California is "Go be fat somewhere else."  People make fun of places like SF banning Happy Meals and forcing places to actually post the content of their food, but it's just good public health.

The bad thing is anytime the costs are born by the public at large, then the public at large gets to determine what they feel like paying for.

The only people who win in any legal case are the lawyers. One letter from a qualified solicitor can run to £1000+ depending on the amount of time they spent on it. If an average solicitor just out of the LPC can charge £280 an hour imagine what the sort of solicitors the NHS employ are going to charge. Solicitors are there to make money... and often in cases involving compensation lawyer's fees are tens of thousands if not more.. and should the case go to court you're looking at barrister's fees, which can be anywhere from £10,000 to £70,000 a day.

I feel qualified to contribute that because my parent's are involved in a lengthy legal battle with the NHS. (And I'm also studying law at university).
