Hmmm, looks like California only has an auto smog inspection program? In any case, unless your dad has a computer that he can hook up to your car to tell him what the problem is, AutoZone is where I would go. Takes two seconds for the guys at the store to hook their computer up to your car and tell you what your car says is the issue.

Glad to hear you made it ok apart from the 'oops' with the light. 
Thankfully my main transport, my motorcycle, is a typically bullet-proof Kawasaki.  My car however is a typical Ford (Fix Or Repair Daily!)

I made a joke about there now being four sisters and no boys in the family and combined that with the similarity to my name to say we were a YaYa sisterhood. She really liked that and has decided to call me YaYa. A little in-joke between sisters.
