So today i was at the mall and picking out some clothes...i hate to say it but i love to shop. So stereotypical i know.
So i was going through the clothes this one store had and upon picking out a sweater i really loved...it dawned on me that wait...perhaps i am too old to wear this. I had never thought this before, i figured hey if i feel good in this, why not wear it? I can pull it off.

So today this exact thought popped in my head, the girl who was helping me out was like...if you like this you should totally try this other color...i have this at home.
Then i looked at her and she had to have been no older than 19
I'm sitting there thinking...WOW does she secretly think i am just some delusional person that is trying to hold on to my youth? It all sounds so paranoid but i wonder if other women feel this way when they reach a certain point in their life?

Even when i walk into Victoria's Secret, some girl suggested that i try on this REALLY sexy lingerie and all i could think about is...omg i am too old for that, i need to wear something less slutty.
I know that age is all about how you feel and blah blah, but i am talking about realistic expectations here.
I am turning 24 this year, At what point am i destined for mom jeans, shoulder-pads, and a prius?? Lol.

*As a side note, i am not trying to diss older people here...i am excited to get older. this isnt a topic about the fear of getting old. i look forward to it. It is simply a topic about dressing your own age (if there is such a thing).  *

I know that feeling! I'm 26 and when I tell people I feel old they just glare at me, lol. A few years back I was a manager for a store called Hot Topic, which sells pop culture and music inspired clothing, accessories, etc. Very young clothing, let's say. There was this mother who used to come in who had to be close to 50, and she rocked a leopard jacket and a lot of the stuff we had. She wasn't completely gaudy and trashy with it, she just knew what she liked. One day she told me, "I dress for me. I don't dress for anybody else." I really thought that was a great thing to live by. If you wear it and feel ridiculous, maybe you should look for something else. But, if you like it, wear it.  :)

Dude, i feel like such a wannabe walking into hot topic. I try to avoid that place like the plague. I remember when i was 16 and dressing like a hot topics spokesperson, but i grew out of that QUICK.  I harsh realization is that when i was younger i could wear anything i wanted, whatever i wanted, if i wanted to dress like a cheap slut i could...if i wanted to dress like a rockstar i could totally make it work. But now it's dawning on me that my choices are quite narrowly restricted lol.

But if that 60 yr old lady can pull off leopard print than good for her?? It all really depends on how you wear it i guess.

Honestly, i dont think it is the fact that we are afraid of getting old. I think it is because we have only been "born" recently and we dont want the fun to end just yet. Right now, we are young, hot, and our boobs are where they need to be. We dont want the heads to stop turning and the bartender to stop asking for our id. We want to dress slutty and have our bfs come home "catching" us dancing around in our panties and getting turned on by it. Dont try to be humble you KNOW it's the real reason!!!

Hilariously, I shop mostly at 'old lady' shops, so I'm actually buying stuff that's technically 20+ years too old for me.
However, I think the only reason why these shops are considered 'old lady' shops is because the clothes tend to cost $200-$300 a piece and the young ones don't tend to have that kind of cash to regularly blow on clothes.  :)

I was just thinking that I should put up a new avatar picture because of this business. I don't think I've been interested in any store less "grown up" than an Express in a year. I'm going through a kind of business / sophisticated fashion transition. But you better believe I wait for a sale!

ok.. rules.. rules.. rules.. if you have gotten carded within the last year or so you can wear whatever you like. period. The rest of us.. used to wear these weird biker shorts as kids (it helps when riding dinosaurs to school) and we're too senile to remember that age appropropriate doesn't refer to movies, cheese, or wine. That's why you see so many of us with cookie monster shirts, hats, earmuffs and such (to go with the dino pants of course!)  ;D

No seriously.. you always look better when you wear something you really like and feel comfortable in. If you have the figure for it, and you like it, go for it :)

Michelle.

When you "ladies" reach....hold that thought. Some of today's late teens early 20's stuff is just awful.

"ladies"? elaborate please =]

You are never too old to dress like a slut.  Ask Cher or Madonna.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

Skyanne

LOL, too old at 24. Kids say the darndest things. :P

ameliat

You young girls who the hormones work better on can pull off wearing what ever you want...when you started on hormones at 50, you don't get hips and the like so have some fun!

Urban dictionary:

Baller - A thug that has "made it" to the big time. Originally refered ball players that made it out of the streets to make millions as a pro ball player, but now is used to describe any thug that is living large.

Violation of rule 10, KillBelle.  That results in a warning.

Sarah Louise

It is not acceptable to call anyone here a (Baller)/Thug.

Please keep things on a higher level.
Nameless here for evermore!;  Merely this, and nothing more;
Tis the wind and nothing more!;  Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore!!"

I've deleted the offending posts for reasons of cosmic harmony and balance...I really thing both Janet and Sarah have said all that needs to be said, but lets just keep things on topic under TOS 10 and 15. Failure to do so will result in the appropriate action being taken.

Which brings us back to the topic, why does mid-twenties feel so old? Screw it - I'm shopping juniors section for life!

uhhhhh yeeeeah ok it was not an offending term. take a chill pill jeez

We're getting off topic again people...this was a topic to discuss dressing your age, not an opportunity to discuss the etymology of slang words with multiple connotations that people the other side of the world may not understand...so again. Lets keep it on topic please.

If you want to laugh at the ridiculous slang terms we all use, start a thread in the general discussion area.
