Hi!!
I may not have mentioned this yet, but I am a writer. I generally write short stories but am working on a couple books. Usuallly, my short stories are very meaningful and teach a lesson. But sometimes, they are my way of secretly getting a point out or showing a hidden meaning in my words. I have just been working on such a story about discrimination and about the quote "strangers among us" And I wonder, if the people who it is written about can find the meaning in my story
The Strangers Among Us
By
A.J. Fulcher
If life we will find a great number of mysteries, many of which we will meet face to face. It is the way of men to seek out the truth and solve the mysteries of life. But there are some mysteries, we will never solve. There are things we cannot see, things that hide from us. In a world of humans, there are those we do not know. There are those who faces we do not see. They hide from us, in plain sight but never to be found. Yes, there are mysteries that we will never meet face to face, despite the fact they look us in the eye. We cannot understand that which we do not know. We fear those things that are different and destroy what we do not understand. And so, just when you believe all is well... You realize there is more to the world, things you do not know... You realize, that there are strangers among us...
Yes, there are strangers out there. They hide amongst us, blending in and silently slipping past our senses. They walk among the crowds in plain sight, yet we do not see them. Harmless creatures, fearfully hiding from our eyes, fearing the worst should they reveal themselves. We have nothing to fear in them, however they have everything to fear in us. These creatures, are strangers to us in that they are not like ourselves or our neighbors. They are different, you see, and fear our judging gaze.
We fear that which is different, that which we do not know... When something is strange to us and we do not understand its nature, we find that logically it must be wrong and therefore it must be destroyed. So, it is for their own safety that these creatures hide, fearing death at our discriminatory hands. There have been those that were brave, as they tried to coexist with us. But, unwilling to understand we persecuted them, torturing the poor souls with our harsh words and even harsher physical blows.
Mercilessly we hunt them down, and draw them out of hiding. We may convince them that it is safe, then destroy them when they are revealed. In fear of the misunderstood, we follow what we believe to be perfect logic and force the strangers among us into hiding... And when one of our own steps forward to offer a kind and sympathetic hand, we desert them and destroy them as we destroy those who hide.
And so it is, that the strangers among us hide... Wanting nothing more than to come out from the shadows and live peacefully with our kind. But they cannot, for we do not know them and fear that which we do not know...
Just as the strangers in this story hide, the truth within these words hides also. The strangers among us are a metaphor of the true strangers of our world. The story you have just read may sound rather strange, and fantastic. You may believe it to be fiction, you may believe it ridiculous or a lie. But the strangers are very real, as is the horrendous way we treat them. They could be your neighbors, your friends, even those you hold most dear. The reality of it all, is that while unknown creatures hiding in plain sight never to be seen, may appear to be quite far fetched, discrimination is real. And just as discrimination exists within our world, so to do the strangers among us. So when you come to think that all is well, you realize that there is more to our world, things you do not know... You realize that there are indeed strangers among us.
