Lady Gaga's 'Gay Anthem' to Be Distributed by Target

Bil's been writing about commercial exploitation of gay teen suicide lately, but any discussion of the recent phenomenon isn't complete without talking about the over-hyped single expected from Lady Gaga, in which she co-opts a decades-old gay phrase that's safe enough for the mainstream now now safe for pop stars, "Born This Way." The slow trickle of information about this song framing it as a gay anthem "for the next 100 years," as if everything from the Stonewall riots to gay teens committing suicide were publicity stunts for Gaga, should be enough to inspire projectile vomit.

[...]

Great for Target to get such a deal with Lady Gaga, because they're so gay-friendly and do nothing to contribute to making life tougher for gay teens... oh wait. There was the whole "funding anti-gay candidates with hundreds of thousands of dollars of reported money and who knows how many millions in unreported cash and not stopping even when gays were all like, 'Hey, that's not cool'" thing.

When I was a very young little kitty Kat there were several record stores (yeah, remember records?) in my home town of (then) 60,000 people.  Sears sold records, Walgreens sold records, Emporium sold records, W.T. Grant sold records, we had a Warehouse, and couple hippie-run independent hippie-type stores.

Today, the town is 150,000 people.  There are exactly three places that sell CDs.  Target, BestBuys and a hippie-run place called, perfectly enough, The Last Record Store.  (there is a WallMart to the north and south of town, but we don't let them in the city limits).

Fact is that WallMart and Target and BestBuys cover about 80% or more of all bricks and mortar sales of music in a physical format.  So your pretty much going to have to pick Target or WallMart, and since WallMart demands the right to censor stuff, you're pretty much stuck with Target.  That's the reality.

Yeah, but if the problem is that T/WM are supporting anti-gay policies/politics/politicians, how do you even begin to know where the profit from the web sales are going?  How do you know that the head of Amazon is not supporting the Tea Party or the KKK or whatever?

Besides, ain't it a bit like worrying about who is selling ice for the ice box in the age of refrigerators?  I have two kids, both huge music fans, (30 and 26), who between them don't own a single CD, it's all digital.

I don't bother with worrying about something like that since it serves no real purpose.

So you didn't bother to RTFA then?

Lady GaGa has made some cissexist comments that make me cringe.
This song has racist slurs. Last time I checked, Gaga's as white as me, if not more.

I don't like her.

should be enough to inspire projectile vomit.
Lady GaGa does enough of that before she even opens her mouth.

I think she's got a lot of nerve and cheek to do this, as I believe she knowingly contributed to 'rumours' of her being hermaphroditic amongst other things, and she's just not even of this planet. Not to mention that anything Lady GooGoo has done was done years before, so she's about as shocking as a damp sponge.

Wish she'd bugger off, to be honest.

Amazing how people who demand torrence from others have less than zero to give out themselves.

I'm holding out for Madonna, who is about the only person who has a write to complain about this song, as she basically wrote it a few years ago as Express Yourself, Ray of Light and Vogue.  But if you're going to steal, steal from the best.
