I've decided to join the forum!

So on to me, I'll keep it brief.  I'm 21 and have recently decided that I will be pursuing HRT( male to female).  Although unlike some I don't plan to let that be the main focus of my life, just a part.  I have an associates degree in graphic design and am currently pursuing my bachelors degree and will finish with it in the summer of 2012.  Im going to schedule my first therapy session in the next few days and hopefully it will take off from there.  Still not sure if I'm going to get kicked out yet( still living at home), but lets hope I don't.

Welcome Terra.  Design is a great career to be trans in.

Haha I hope so.  I really love graphic design with a passion and would hate for it suffer due to my gender change. >>  I'm not gonna out myself publicly until I'm out of school though.  I'm one of the better designers at my school and would hate to lose out on recommendations or something from teachers who currently like me but might have some grudge against transwomen.

I don't know if that's a great idea.  Designers, more than a lot of other careers, rely on internships and peer relationships to give them a head start.  I think your teachers, peers, and internship opportunities should know who you are.  It's not a great idea to leave them behind.

College is a relatively safe place to transition and it's better to graduate as the girl you are and start job hunting as the girl you are instead of trying to deal with that after school.  It's going to set you back and you won't have the student loan options or general college life support.

You may find that being trans actually increases your opportunities.  Especially if shame or this secret makes you at all socially awkward.  I'm not sure where you are but I'm pretty hooked in to the design community.  PM me if you want to talk about it.  Waiting, especially if you're young...might cause some major regrets.  You have some major opportunity for better results if you start HRT asap.

I don't plan to leave any of my teachers or peers behind, just not tell them while im in school for the most part.  My school gives out these mini checks for 300$ or more every semester for things that the teachers vote on like most creative etc.. I'd hate to miss out on those opportunities due to some grudge.  I'm not waiting to start HRT till after highschool, I actually just went to therapy yesterday and plan to start hormones in hopefully a month at the latest.  I do hear your concerns though and will consider how i plan this approach more carefully.

And yes it was a futurama reference ;3
