The Portuguese parliament, overriding a presidential veto, has approved a bill easing post-operative red tape for transsexuals.

The leftist majority in the legislature, accom panied by seven lawmakers from the main opposition Social Democratic Party, passed the bill for the second time late last week.

President Cavaco Silva, a conservative, had vetoed the law sponsored by the ruling Socialists on 6 January.

The bill eases the bureaucratic process for transsexuals who have undergone surgery to alter their names and civil registry.
