A transgender woman announced her candidacy for Amarillo mayor Thursday and said she hoped her lifestyle doesn't become a distraction during the election.

"It could turn (into a circus) depending on the media," Sandra Dunn, 53, said at a news conference for her announcement at Furrbie's restaurant downtown. "That was a concern when we thought about running. We may gain national attention."

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- After being approached by some friends and thinking it over, Sandra Dunn, who also happens to be transgendered, decided to run for mayor of Amarillo.

"I thought this would be a good opportunity to run for mayor and kind of get the word out about transgendered folks and let people know that we are here in town and we do exist, but I also think I have the experience to lead the city."

  So frustrating! By announcing to the world that she hopes her "lifestyle" doesn't become the issue; it just did! I sent her a recommendation to avoid using that term!

I hope she has a chance and even better I hope she wins!

AMARILLO, Texas (NBC) -- A man who became a woman hopes to become Amarillo's next mayor. It is the first time in the city's history that a transgender woman has filed to run for office. But it's not the first time this candidate has asked for your vote.

Candidate Sandra Dunn says "we all have our differences and that's what makes us great. Let me work for you as your mayor."

Sandra Dunn, a transgender woman, is challenging the mayoral aspirations of a homophobic pastor in Amarillo, Tex.

Dunn is running against David Grisham, a fundamentalist preacher who previously called for a boycott of Houston because it has a lesbian mayor.

I applaud her in running but using the word 'lifestyle' is a bad choice of words. Transgender is who we are, not a lifestyle.

I held a conversation with her. She says that she did not use that word, and would be on guard for it being utilized in the future. But, appreciated it being brought to her attention.
