Jeanette and Justine Lane have an astonishing bond that goes beyond that of normal mother and daughter – because Justine was ­Jeanette's son for the first year of her life.

Just hours after giving birth 30 years ago, Jeanette and her husband Malcolm were shocked to discover their newborn baby was intersex – meaning it had male and female sex organs.

Told to bring up the child as a boy, they named him Justin. But just a year later the couple were advised to switch their baby's sex and bring him up as a girl.
