Drag performer Taylor Mac's "very religious" mother, who raised him and his sister in California, now loves his work. But for a good decade, she didn't understand her son's pastiche and parody: she was "really scared", says the 37-year-old singer, playwright and performance artist, "that I was going down a horrible path".

Mac, long based in New York, will never know what his father, a "macho-soldier guy", would have thought about having a drag queen for a son. Second Lieutenant Robert Mac Bowyer died in a drunken motorcycle accident before Taylor turned four.
