Tailor-made urinary tubes have been built from the cellular material of patients and successfully implanted in the self-donors to replace damaged tissue, a big step in regenerative medicine, with direct relevance for female-to-male sex reassignment surgery and the correction of some intersex conditions.

A medical research team replaced damaged segments of urinary tubes (urethras) in five boys. Tests to measure urine flow and tube diameter showed that the engineered tissue remained functional throughout the six-year (median) follow-up period.

This is excellent news. Hopefully, it won't be too long until this twchnology has ben deveopled sufficietly for it to be of general benefit to all FtM men.

This is wonderful.

I'm just hoping they manage erectile tissue at some point. This stuff's coming out fast enough I might just avoid any genital surgery until they come up with something more-or-less fully functional.

I'm sure we all read the story about the lab-grown rabbit penis. I just hope they can apply it to humans too :)

i think im having a bit of a hard time understanding exactly what this is. would this help ftm's that might not be able to use their own 'skin'/body parts down there to create their own urethra? because i thought the new urethra is created from parts/skin this is already down there.

it is, but the reliability of urethralplasty is pretty lousy (fistula/holes, stricture/narrowing) and healing from the surgery isn't pretty either.

it usually isn't as much an issue with meta since there is less to graft, but with phallo, it's pretty much 50% chance of something bad happening.

Essentially, this is a new way to do the job.

We shouldn't get our hopes up too much at this stage. It will be a while. But the technology will almost certainly open up new areas which can be exploited.

That's what is so exciting.
