CHENNAI: She's used to being under the arclights. But when flashbulbs popped on Thursday afternoon, former TV chat show host and transgender Rose Venkatesan was announcing her decision to carve a career for herself in an equally exciting field — politics. "If I am chosen to contest against Karunanidhi, I will go ahead and do my best," says Rose, who filed her application for a DMDK ticket a week ago.

Tamil Nadu has been at the forefront of social reform and is the first state to grant 'third gender' status to transgenders. TN constituted a welfare board for them and announced April 15 as Transgender Day. The forthcoming election could see two transgenders in the fray if they manage to get tickets — Rose and transgender rights activist Kalki Subramaniam.
