It is very hard for me to coax my computer to play youtube clips (or any video), so could somebody tell me the content so I can figure if I should try? Is it about transkids, or strange kids, or gay kids, or is it something more general?

Its more general, although she does mention that she was bullied for transitioning.

Lol okay I asked the wrong questions. Instead of asking you about content, I should have asked myself to wait until my daughter was asleep to screen the video. She got mad twitchy when suicide was mentioned.

She did identify with the whole not being liked thing. My kid is liked by adults but never by peers.

It took her awhile to realize the girl was trans, though, and then she asked me if Josie was going to transition to male. Lol, gender is confusing.

Thanks for the link. :)

Off-topic, but why does your rig have trouble with clips? Is it a network/software/ or hardware issue?

I've done a lot of computer work, so if you give me some idea of what the problem is I could probably clue you in on how to fix it.

Okay, so hey Guantanamera I'll give you the specs with the caveat that though I was raised by programmers and hackers I'm technologically illiterate. Please don't make fun of me.

I got my computer out of the dumpster. My neighbor had gotten it used from a recyclery. It's a mac running OSX 10.4, has 512 megabytes of ram, and cannot handle any recent releases of Firefox. It can't actually handle the newer configurations of most software.

It's a PowerPC G4, one of those silly-looking machines that has the monitor and logic board stuff all in one unit.

It actually operates a lot better and faster than you might expect, but often only with tweaking and nudging. It'd kinda crap, and I'm kinda unskilled enough that I think I'm not getting the full mileage out of it on top of that.

I'm talking like the network's fine, but it's Comcast, and those guys are greedy monsters who rarely tell us about how they manage bandwidth and stuff.

I do think a lot of the problem is that no up-to-date browser works on this machine.

That appears to be the issue here. What happens when you attempt to install an up to date browser? What browser are you using now? What happens when you attempt to play a video? What do you normally do to fix that problem and actually play the video?

When I try to install an up to date browser it tells me that my hardware is not good enough. The browser I'm currently using is Firefox 3.6.24. I abandoned Safari awhile back, but last time I used it it was pretty glitchy and unpleasant.

When I want to play video, if there's a load progress bar, I start the video, pause, and let the progress bar get all the way loaded. If there's no visible bar, I do roughly the same thing, but not for as long.

Sometimes I have to mess with scripts and stuff to get things going. Sometimes I need to modify the adblocker settings. Sometimes video works without those extra steps, and sometimes it doesn't work no matter how many extra steps I take.

Disclaimer: I'm a linux guy, and have stayed away from Macs like the plague.

Aside from that, it seems to me that you have two options:

Either upgrade your rig  although that seems unlikely that you could upgrade that machine, considering it's Macintosh, and they probably discontinued parts for it years ago. However, you might be able to find more ram via a model bought online and subsequently gutted, but that's more risky than sporting a mullet. (Unless in the unlikely event, you can use parts from other models or their is an illegal third party company that is selling parts.)

Your second option is to suffer it out: From what you've described, it seems exactly like the behavior you would expect from browsers that aren't HTML 3, 4 or 5 compatible, because they don't conform to the standards it makes things generally glitchy and a pain to work with. (Hence the need for a script monkey.) In addition to your low system resources, the browser is going to have to pass a (relatively) large amount of data through a small pipe with rust and holes in the side, problems are going to be a fact of life unfortunately.

However, you might be able to use a resource lean browser such as iCab and that could improve your performance, but I doubt it would be anything super dramatic. I know of a large amount of browsers are based around this concept (nerds don't like to throw anything away.) you would just have to do some googling to determine what would be best for your particular software/hardware situation.

If I may ask, where in the world did you find this computer? Also, is accessing these forums a chore? Because I find the wait time intolerable on a high end system with a 10 mbit connection.

Lol like I said I rescued it from the garbage. My neighbor had originally gotten it from a local diy recyclery/community skill building place - http://www.freegeek.org/.

I picked up this machine for my daughter to have something to putter around on. When my laptop died I thought my using her computer would be temporary, but that was a couple years ago.

I thought about adding ram, but I don't even know how to open this thing. There are no access panels, and the screws look like a hex tool would fit, but they don't move.

I may look into iCab or something along that line of thinking.

I actually have no lag or loading problems with these forums, apart from when people post video or use certain character sets, and even that is pretty minor hiccups provided I don't click on anything.
