During debate over a bill that would legislate a dress code for Florida students, Passidomo blamed the alleged gang raping of an 11-year-old in Cleveland, Texas on the way the young girl was dressed.

One committee member, Rep. Kathleen Passidomo (R-Naples) said she'd read recently a horrible story out of Texas about the rape of a young girl.

"There was an article about an 11 year old girl who was gangraped in Texas by 18 young men because she was dressed like a 21-year-old prostitute," she said. "And her parents let her attend school like that. And I think it's incumbent upon us to create some areas where students can be safe in school and show up in proper attire so what happened in Texas doesn't happen to our students."

It sounds more like she was commenting on something she Read, not stating her opinion.

It sounds to me like she (and others) actually think that it's reasonable for 18 young men to gang-rape a 20 year old prostitute, never mind an 11-year old who "dressed like one". Either way it's an appalling response to an appalling event - even if she'd been 20.

She made the remarks as part of a legislative debate, on the floor of the Florida House.

Just show how stupid politicians are, especially the Repubs.

The 18 men were old enough to make campaign contributions worth more than what the 11 year old girl could break out of her piggy bank.

So I guess Reagan was responsible for his being shot, because he was a Republican president?  ::)

If he were trying to run for office today old St. Ronnie would be labeled a RINO by these folks.

But let me be clear.  We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them. And whatever your particular problem is, I promise you, the GOP is not the least bit interested in solving it. They are interested in two things and two things only: making you afraid of it and telling you who's to blame for it.  To that end they are interested in producing a nation of docile sheep who merely do what they are told to do, and snitches who rat out everybody not following the party line.

All politicians have what is known as Foot-in-Mouth disease, not to be compared to the bovine Foot and Mouth disease.  They all have it, no matter their party affiliation.  This disease flares up when their brain is not engaged when their mouth is open.  Remember Interior Secretary James Watt during the Reagan Administration?  Mr. Watt opened his mouth a few times before Reagan gave him a golden Foot-In-Mouth trophy in the Rose Garden in front of the reporters.
As with the Texas state Rep. Passidomo, she was way out of line when she blamed an 11 year old for her own gang rape!  The victim is a child and should be treated with respect for her age and Passidomo should not put any kind of adulterous connotation with that child's name.
As for people accepting what I am, all that I know that accepted me, including my church-loving Texan sister, all of my quite large extended family thus far including a radical Democratic cousin and a few friends, most of them are from the Judeo-Christian faith and are mostly Republican (~90% so far).  Those who don't, these are the avowed athiests, some Democratic, some over-testosterated Republicans of both sexes, those that are from other affiliated or just plain lukewarm.
My scorecard so far:  Republicans = Accepting, some will help;  Democrats = Only a few accepting, others lukewarm, most with a NIMBY attitude.  Go figure!

A rather more balanced view which makes the case all the more shocking.

Indeed it makes the comments of the politician who was at the root of this thread seem even more disgusting and mindless.  No where in this article does it mention that the girl "dressed provocatively", and in fact it places grave doubts that she did dress in a way that provoked her ordeal.  Her ordeal was the result of people who consider others to be "play toys" and not humans.  She should have been a little sister to be honored, loved and nurtured as a person who could have grown into a leader for their community, but they only saw her as trash to be toyed with and discarded.

Agreed Vicky.

The very idea that there can ever be mitigation for raping a child in this way beggars belief.

The detals of the case, as outlined in the NYT, suggest that what was happening was considerably more disgusting than first indicated.

I don't normally feel comfortable with gradiouse gestures, but given the information here, I think this entire town needs to be contained and its residents, especially the professionals, be carefully councilled. They sure seem to need it.

Are they suggesting that it's okay to gang rape 21 year old prostitutes?

These people make me want to vomit for a variety of reasons but this takes the cake!

I do think that some clothing firms are marketing profoundly inappropriate clothing towards children and that there is a problem with sexualising people far too young (I don't know about the U.S, but it's a big problem in the U.K) But it's NOT the same as blaming a victim for a horrific crime that has been committed against her.

If someone has a nice car, am I allowed to steal it and then blame the victim, claiming that if they hadn't have had such a nice car then I wouldn't have stolen it, and it was their fault for making me envious!!!!! >:(

And this is the way that we treat children in the 'civilised world!' ???
