Androgyny is one of the hottest looks on the catwalk right now, with Melbourne models at the forefront of its success.

When you spot cover model James Varley's big eyes, pillowy lips and strong brow, it's hard not to be struck by the distinctive power of androgyny, of seeing two genders - or perhaps none - in the same frame. It's something the fashion industry has certainly harnessed of late. The 22-year-old Melburnian joins fellow Aussie models such as Sydney's Cooper Thompson and Broadmeadows sensation Andrej Pejic - dubbed the "James Blonde" of international modelling - in an industry infatuated with androgyny. But is it really anything new, or just another round in an unending cycle of boys-will-be-girls and girls-will-be-boys?
