Funny how things go sometimes - first we get this promising questionnaire about how we can improve services for transgender people, now I get this forwarded from my support group leader:

----

The Government appears to be consulting on scrapping the entire Equality Act, which includes ALL anti-discrimination legislation in the UK, which protects LGB&T people from being fired for being LGB&T, amongst many other important protections.

The consultation is here http://www.redtapechallenge.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/equalities/.

This is part of a new website to encourage the public to tell the Government where to cut red tape.  One of the first areas to be examined includes the Equality Act – and one of the suggestions requiring comment is to scrap the Act altogether to cut unnecessary bureaucracy on business and the public sector.

Obviously the scrapping of the Equality Act would be disastrous for LGB&T people (as well as many others).

Therefore can I urge you to please go on to the website and leave your own comments about why the Equality Act is important, and please encourage your staff and supporters to respond too.

Please distribute this far and wide amongst any and all networks you have access to. It doesn't have to be an overlong comment, but it is important that we register our support for the Equality Act.

Thank you
Adam Winter

I actually pointed out to them on the questionnaire that the Equality act 2010 was flawed and I wasn't a fan of it. The loophole that allows us to be blocked of a service or fired from a job if "a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim"

The loophole is sufficiently vague that we can be penalized for it if someone is out for our blood.
