Hi all, and thanks to everyone who replies. Im in an awful situation, and although I don't frequent this site, the kind people here are literally all I have to turn to. My parents are fed up with me not having a job and I completely understand. I've been job hunting but no luck so far. I just had a conversation with my mom and it went horrible. She told me that I'm crazy for applying for jobs as me. And that no one will ever hire a girl like me. She also said that I need to try things as a boy once again. I can't go back though. I literally can't. I'd rather die. I'm just now starting to get comfortable with myself and now this. I called the center in LA because I know that they have a shelter there and they're full. They said I can be put on a waiting list(I now am) but I have no idea how long that will take. I'm so lost. My only options are find a job, or move out. I'm stuck. Where can I find a job? Who will hire a young trans girl with basically no experience.

Please help
Thank you to anyone and everyone who has any input.

Tell your parents you change your mind and you want to go to trade school or college. Do whatever you have to do but get a skill that will allow you to survive on your own. I know that this is not what you want to hear, but it is my best advice.

Once you have a degree try to get in one of those companies (top 500) who offer insuracne who cover SRS, HT, etc, and who are pro TS/TG

Best,

Kate

You not said where you have been trying.  But restaurant, fast food, even temporary services.

If you are close to Anaheim, try Disney. They are very GLBT friendly and have hired many of our trans brothers and sisters. You may need a letter from a therapist though. I just got hired last week.

If you could qualify for the pell grant, you might get paid pretty well for going back to school. Here it's up to 5500 per year that you can receive!

Thank you all for your replies. And Janet, i've been trying pretty much anywhere and everywhere. Target, Walmart, McDonalds, and every other fast-food and or retail store you can think of.. Not so much as an interview. And I do live near Anaheim and I applied at Disneyland. I got an interview with disneyland 2ish months ago and the interview went great ...I thought. The lady who interviewed me told me that she was going to put me on an "employee waiting list" and that I would be contacted once a spot opened up for me. I thought this was just a nice way of letting me down, but after doing some research. I think that they actually did put me on a waiting list. I looked around online and many people have said that they too were put on a waiting list and that eventually they were contacted and hired. A few friends have similar stories. So I think that they do intend to hire me but I really just don't know. Two months seems like a long time. It would be fine with me to just wait it out until I do get hired (IF I do, fingers crossed.) But my parents simply will not tolerate it any longer. And they think that the reason I can't find a job is because i'm trans. Which is frustrating because I really don't think that is the case. I consider myself passable, and have posted pics here a few different times and everyone else seems to think so. Also I have met guys and chatted with them even danced and they had no clue. So I know that it can't be about my trans status because I truly think that when I apply for a job, the employees don't know. I don't see how me being trans could be the issue when I haven't even interviewed anywhere (except for Disneyland, and I also had an over the phone interview with Nordstroms, no go.) But my parents just can't see me as the girl that I am. And now they are trying to force me to live as male again and that thought frightens me to be honest. I've made so much progress and to go back would be awful. I'm just stuck.. hopefully I can find a job and prove them wrong because then maybe they would relax on the trans issue..

Thanks again

Call Disney again and keep calling them. Show them you really want to work for them.

They offered to put me on a waiting list or work part-time to start then transfer to full-time. I picked the latter option. Disney health insurance for full-time employees covers SRS.

I'd do as Melody suggest too. Give them a call to show them that they are still on your list, and that you would really LOVE to work at Disney.

Have you tried any gay/lesbian run cafe's, bookshops etc.  Training in espresso making could come in handy too.

Karen.

Thanks for the replies. Wow, Melody you are just full of great information. So I hate to sound so clueless but should I just call the disney casting center (where I was interviewed) And say something like.. "Hi, I interviewed about 2 months ago and was put on a waiting list. I'd like to check the status of that If possible."
?? I'm really clueless. But it does make me feel ALOT better that they mentioned the waiting list to you also. It must mean thay I really am on a waiting list and that i'm not crazy :X And do they really pay for SRS? It seems to good to be true lol! Where can I find all of that information? I'd love to get the details on that.

Thanks again to everyone.

My advice, call the Disney Casting Center and tell them you were put on the waiting list (you still have the number for the list right? They should have given you a specific number when they put you on the list. Well, if not they should be able to look you up by social or your name). Tell them you are just checking in because you are very interested in working with them. If you remember who your recruiter was you can call them directly and leave a message when/if you don't get through. They like getting callbacks because it shows you are interested as long as you don't like call them every week, ya know?

If you're willing it's great to offer that you're interested in any open position just make sure to say something more like "I'm very interested in working for your company so I'm interested in any open positions" You'll have a shot at transferring after 2-6 months depending on what your managers will tell you so it might be worth it to start out doing something other than what you wanted. I've known quite a few people to get hired there so that's my suggestion.

Thanks Andrew, you all have such great advice. Thank you thank you thank you! Grrrrrr.. I was never given a number for the waiting list :( I don't know what that means. I will be calling either way though. If I could get hired there that would be fantastic! Especially since they're so trans friendly it would be great not to have to worry about that! :)

Fingers crossed...

Sorry Drippin, I guess Disneyworld does things a little differently. Here, when they put you on the waiting list for an open position they give you a card with a number to help them identify who you are and where you are at on the waiting list. Good luck with the call!

QuoteAnd they think that the reason I can't find a job is because i'm trans.

Exactly how have you handled the legal issues. Your SS# tells your gender as you name and driver lic. They will do a check. Unless you had SRS you can not get SS to change your gender in the computer.  So you would have lied on your application making it an automatic no.

@Lisa, my legal name is gender neutral. So there's no way that raised any eyebrows. And every single application I've filled out has given the option of "prefer not to say" on the gender part..

Yes you have to find a job because it's impossible to live an independent life in America without a cash flow.  And when you need money, any job is better than no job.  I've worked fast food, done janitorial work, construction, recreation supervisor, pizza maker, barestia, Hostel worker (and hostile worker at that), painted, and installed solar panels to make money.  But beyond that, you need to start thinking about what you are really going to do.   American guys meet other guys like this: What's your name?  What do you do?  It's the second thing any other guy wants to know about you.  What skills do you have, what services do you provide, work, work, work.  People who are lucky or work on it somehow manage to get to a place where they are doing work they love, and it gives them much more than a paycheck.

Finally spoke with the casting center.. I told them I was placed on a waiting list and that I was calling to check the status.. The lady told me that basically they're waiting for a position to open and they would contact me once one did. Blah :/

Quoteprefer not to say

Code word trouble.  Yes you are in your legal right and they in not hiring you. You have to come across squeaky clean in a competitive market place. Anything questionable and you are not even considered.
  •

tekla

"prefer not to say" = instant circular file material

I doubt if 1 out of 10,000 millions and millions of people who read such things would read any further than that.

So should I just put male and hope they don't pay too much attention to it?

What ever matches your legal social security and driver identification. Most places when they do hire you ask for identification. If you are male but present as a women then you only have a chance at Trans friendly bussiness. To get the first job you might just present as a male and try to change on the job after they like you.
