Ask Matt Monday: Asking for a Marriage Blessing

A reader writes: "I'm a transguy who's been exclusively and quite seriously dating another transguy for about a year now. Though we have been dating for a relatively short time, I am sure I want to settle down with this guy. I plan on proposing soon. I am 99 percent sure he will say yes.

"My issue is I feel like I should ask for his dad's blessing (not permission). I don't know why I feel like I need to. I don't know if it's because at some point earlier in our lives we identified as women, so I'm holding on to some antiquated notion, or I am just feeling like it's the polite thing to do. I feel like even if we were cisgendered guys, I would still feel the need to ask for a blessing from his dad.
