Cindy

Well I got one of these forms in the mail saying I'd been randomly selected by the Australian Board of Statistics to fill in a survey by interview. I phoned to make an appointment after hours as I work. So when we were on the phone the woman asked, after we booked the time, and what is your first name. I replied Cindy, she said Sidney? No Cindy I'm a woman with a deep voice. Fine she says.

So we have just done the interview. Charming woman who referred to me as Cindy straight from answering the door. I was wearing a nice skirt, pink top (OK I like pink) and boots (I like boots as well).
We had the usual questions. Then it came onto what medications are you on, so I told the S the E the P etc. She just typed away. Then there came the question, and they are all listed in front of me, do you have any physical deformities or birth defects? Yes I say, can I list them she asks. A penis and testicles and lack of vagina and breasts (I kept it simple). Ok she says where do we find that; You can try transgender I say, helpfully. No, we have transsexual, will that do? She replied.
So we are on a survey, we may get medical treatment, but don't hold your breath  But there was no lack of respect in 'public' and I felt very comfortable and I didn't get any bad vibes from her.

Goddess I couldn't have done this sort of stuff even a year ago.

I'm so happy

No. It will not do. It isn't accurate. It doesn't describe anything.

Can we perhaps load other, inconvienent symptoms into the transsexual group. Male impotance? No-one like to talk about that. How about rape? Not something anyone likes to think about.

Oh, we don't seem to have terminal illness, will transsexual do?

Sorry Spacial are you OK?

There were lists for impotence, physical and psychological abuse and if you responded your answers kept going to another section and another set of questions. I did mention rape and ended up on a series of questions about it, which focussed on the medical support I had received (none).

I didn't feel there was anyway they wanted to distort the facts at the collection level, they were trying to collect facts.

Sounds like an interesting survey Cindy.   You were probably one of the more normal respondents! If there is one thing we do right here it's useful medical data collection, and public health measures. It will be interesting to see what their conclusions are, no doubt they will be in the press and on TV news eventually.

I understand.

I was responding to the suggestion that transsexual can be a substitute for transgender.

But I accept I probably picked up the wrong end of the stick. (Or perhaps it was a form).
