The more I look into the forums, the more I notice one fact: the huge majority of girls here seem have their ears pierced... Just like the huge majority of girls outside the forums, actually...

But personally, I have always been hugely grossed out by the very concept of piercings, even in the ears. Do you think never piercing my ears could hinder my passing in some way? By a very little amount? So much that I wouldn't believe it? Not at all?

Lots of girls don't pierce their ears.

There just seems to be a larger range of ear rings for pierced and there is no pain associated with wearing ear rings with pierced ears.

I have double in each ear.

Love them

While it is true that you see a lot of women with pierced ears, you also see a lot of women who don't. I have a good friend in classes with me and she doesn't have pierced ears. My girlfriend's ears are pierced but she almost never wears anything.

I don't think it would hinder your efforts to pass, at least not noticeably. I want to get my ears pierced someday, but that's just me.

If a person doesn't want to get their ears pierced, they don't have to... Some folks can't get piercings due to allergies

I also have double in each ear and love them... But that doesn't mean you have to... Do what is comfortable for you  :)

I love mine, they help me get through stupid boy mode.

My S.O. has pierced ears, three on each side, yellow, chocolate colored, and white diamond studs I bought her are just sitting around in jewelry boxes as she wears no earrings at all anymore.

I'm so taking the yellow ones.

Sorry to expand this thread, please forgive.

I love buying ear rings and of course wearing them. I find them very mood defining, and a fashion statement when needed. But when I have to present as male there nothing like my garnet (coloured) studs just behind my gold hoops to throw everyone into a spin.
And I do get comments, last one at work was, Oh you've got new earrings. I love them, they look great. Female from another department and she was not being rude.

I have never had a comment from a guy. Except for one time when I was on TV in an interview and one friend said, I saw you interviewed last night but you had taken your ear rings out.

I'm petrified of needles, couldn't even think of getting any piercings. I went to a local church fair and there was a jewelry crafter there with hundreds of pairs of clip-on earrings! I stocked up! You can find them online, too, of course.

piercing guns don't use needles, they 'fire' the stud through the ear directly there's a slight pinchy feeling but it's not like getting a shot from the doctor

<picking self up off floor and hitting the smelling salts> Thanks so much for the technical update, Princess, but since I don't want to faint in a mall, I'm sticking with the clip-ons! Sorry about the spelling disaster, too!

My sister doesn't have pierced ears.  If you want them, get them, if not, don't :)

I do not have my ears pierced and it has not hindered my passability in any way, shape, or form.

In the month-long period of going full time last August, I hit the mall and got pierced. No pain, minimal and momentary discomfort. The primary parts of the apparatus are sterilized, the studs that actually penatrate are one-time and sterilized. Rubber gloves were donned, even the work counter was sterilized. It does require effort for several months; I wore the starter studs all the time, followed a regular cleaning regimen with the solution provided (hydrogen peroxide is just as good) and made sure to keep twisting them to avoid grow-back and closure.

For me, ear rings were a sort of a rite of passage to girl-hood. I usually wear them. If ear rings are important to you, get pierced; if they are not - don't bother. For me clipons are finicky, and I always had pinching problems after wearing a while. Then again, they were all cheapies.

I think that piercing your ears shouldn't have a huge bearing on passing. I mean, sure, there are certain ingrained stereotypes in people's brains so if you were wearing big, feminine ear rings they would think of that when they saw them. However, I understand your fear perfectly because one of my close friends wont even let you near her with a sewing needle, let alone get a piercing! A million years ago, when I was in high school, and ex boyfriend pierced only one of my ears. That came in handy later (not having both of the pierced) but unless I put incredibly gender neutral rings/ studs in them, it detracts seriously from my ability to pass. I think it's the same ingrained stereo type working the other way

The pierced holes in our ears are so small that most of the time people don't notice if someone's ears are pierced or not. Plus even if the hole heals the pierced indent will remain so you won't be able to get rid of the look if you end up not liking it. Just wear a pair of non pierced earrings. Magnetic earrings are good for looking like you have pierced stud earrings.
We have only one lifetime to be ourself.

I also suggest you look for some of the spring loaded hoops.  They look great and totally convincing as if you had your ears pierced.  I have found that they do not hurt as much as the clip kind.

If you don't want to get your ears pierced there is no need to do that. Just be yourself, it is meaningless to go into transition to end up presenting yourself in an untrue manner.

I wanted to get my ears pierced since I was 5 but waited all this time because I was afraid how people would react. When my friends heard of this they dragged me to the jewelry shop and treated me to a pair of earrings.
I am so glad they did so, it was the first visible step in coming to terms with my identity by doing something for myself instead of doing what others expect of me.
Now I absolutely adore earrings and often change them to match my mood and clothing.

I'm not sure if it will make that much of a difference, as many girls don't have their ears pierced, and many guys do.  If you're grossed out by them, don't do it.
