Senate approves amendment to ban same-sex marriage
Posted by: Bob von Sternberg under Gov. Mark Dayton, Minnesota legislature Updated: May 11, 2011 - 2:52 PM
A constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage in Minnesota took a decisive step Wednesday toward ending up on the 2012 ballot.

After more than three hours of  often-emotional debate, the Senate approved the proposed amendment by a vote of 38 to 27. The House, which has not yet taken up the bill, is expected to pass it, as well.

Although Gov. Mark Dayton opposes the measure, which defines marriage as solely between a man and a woman, he has no voice in the decision because constitutional amendments do not require a governor's signature to be placed on the ballot and he can't veto it.

State law already defines marriage as the amendment does, but supporters say the amendment is needed to prevent judges, or a future legislature, from overturning the law.

****** Outfront Minnesota is hosting another rally ... so anyone in the area come out and support our community our families our lives!

The broader question is how the tenor of the voting populous happens to be on the issue.  Let's face it...viewed big picture, I would much rather a Constitutional question be put to the voters than for a small legislative body make a decision NOT to allow the voters to speak up.

Depending on which specific ballot it wound up on, I could envision your State turning out enough people to shoot it down...I always hated Constitutional issues that would show up on muni ballots because my State does good to get a 7-8% turnout on some of the local elections (ie. no national issues on the ballot).

dear retardicans in state gov:

after screwing us over with the corporate welfare stadium tax, you expect me to bend over with banning already banned same sex marriage?

screw you all

(it was a straight party vote, exactly that (we) sowed from the last election.)

edit: Outfront has a thing for a rally for the house to not vote for it, if going by senate vote it will be party lines again, which i project to mean 14 votes for, 11 against
