Inside Ex-Gay Therapy: Homosexual Behavior Is A Fantasy Addiction To A Wounded Gender Identity

Joseph Nicolosi, founder of ex-gay group NARTH and trainer of many other ex-gay therapists, is back with another brief article attempting to explain his perspective on the nature of homosexuality.

[...]

What Nicolosi is trying to suggest is that gay people (and "the extreme case of transsexuals") were somehow sent the wrong messages by their parents about how they are supposed to understand their own gender. This leads to a sense of inner conflict that they then address through compulsively trying to fulfill that "false" identity. Essentially, he thinks that gay people are just actors cast in the wrong role who don't know how escape the performance because they believe they are trying to fix some kind of "past trauma" by acting it out.

Homosexual Behavior as Reparative Theatre
Submitted by Admin on January 29, 2013 – 8:53 am

By Joesph Nicolosi, Ph.D.

The Self-State distinction essential to Reparative theory finds theoretical support in the writings of Joyce McDougall. In her clinical studies, she confirms Reparative theory's understanding of homosexual enactment as a gender-based self-reparation; i.e., a means of "repairing" a wound in gender identity.

[...]

The compulsive/repetitive enactment of these rituals represents a symbolic attempt to resolve psychic conflict caused by a problematic parental message regarding the child's sexuality. In the extreme case of transsexuals, for example, McDougall reports that her patients..."felt that at last they would be recognized by the mother and what she had always unconsciously desired for them" (McDougall, 2000, p.186). These "erotic scenarios" serve to safeguard the feeling of sexual identity but are a technique of psychic survival in that they preserve the feeling of subjective identity. As "compulsive neo-sexual inventions," they represent the best possible solution that the child of the past was able to find in the face of contradictory parental communications regarding gender identity and sex role. "And they come to the child or the adolescent as revelation of what his or her sexuality is, along with the sometimes painful recognition that it is somehow different from that of others: there is no awareness of choice" (McDougall, 1986, p.21).

Some serious psycho-scientific drivel here!  ::) ::) ::)

I think that the majority of Narth are so far in the closet they are finding Christmas presents. :P

Perhaps Narth could create a poll for their members measuring denial...1. Yes or no, Have you heard of latent homosexuality?, 2. Yes or no, are you heterosexual? Conclusion- If you answered no on the first question and yes on the second question, you are in denial. :P

And to top it all off...

Ted Haggard is completely heterosexual!

Sorry, I had to use that one! :)

Try "pseudo-scientific" and you'll have it right. I'd post what my ex-therapist had to say about Nicolosi, but it would probably break forum decency standards.

Let's assume, for the moment, this is true.

In what way does it demonstrate a need for change?

I ask this here because, (surprise, surprise), the article is: Comments are closed.

Peer reviewed my A$$.

That paragraph is nothing but a pile of vague Psychology terms masquerading as hard-science. That paragraph could mean anything you want it to.

One wonders what cracker-jack box Nicolosi got his PhD out of.  My heart goes out to all gay men who are forced to endure those lies, and stigma, and the implicit message that they are 'broken' and need 'repairitive therapy.'

I have yet to find any definition by gay-haters as to what I am.  Gay or Straight.

I'd just like to watch their heads explode.   ;D ;D ;D

By legal definition I am a woman, so I guess that I'm lesbian.

But I was born with outdoor plumbing, so I guess I'm straight (don't tell my husband, she thinks I'm lesbian).

No one as adequately answered (or even addressed) this paradox.  That is because orientation to a transsexual is meaningless.  We love who we love and plumbing is just that, no big deal.

But the haters gotta hate.  To them we're just icky.  I wish they'd just say that and be done with it.  It would be honesty in their hatred.

Its disheartening that charlatans like him can stay in business.

It would be nice if every state did this.

Psychiatry, making it possible for me to beat up something other than religion all day :)

I think the only reason a few psychiatrists don't come off sounding like %*&#$@ morons is the same reason not all religious people are intolerant jerks.

I feel sad for them though, they likely actually believe the crap floating around in their heads.
Well being TG is no treat, but becoming separated has sure caused me more trouble that being TG ever will be. So if I post, consider it me trying to distract myself from being lonely, not my needing to discuss being TG. I don't want to be separated a lot more than not wanting to be male looking.
