Honoring Mother and Father

Writing this in dealing with Father's day.  I know the Bible says we are to honor our mother and father.  I have always tried to do that, even though my parents have never supported me...in anything.  And I am just wondering...are we supposed to honor people, that continue to tear us down?  When is it ok to say, I have done my best?  I don't need to do anymore?  I would love to call my Dad this Sunday, hope for a good talk.  I know it's what I should do, but do i have the right to not do it, for my own well being?  Or is that being selfish?

Christians don't have obligations, we have freedom.

As for honoring parents, that doesn't necessarily mean what too many people make it into.  Remember when Mary and Joseph were looking for Jesus, when Jesus was back at the temple?  He stated that His father is Father God.  But at the same time, the Spirit of God compels us to love all, including even our enemies.  How that works out, I don't always know, and I think it's something a person needs to listen to God on.

My understanding, from the clarification Jesus gave us on this commandment is that we honour our parents by showing them respect, not following them blindly.

I, eventually, honoured my father by staying away from him. We didn't get along. We made each other uncomfortable. He strongly disapproved of me, on every level. By staying around him I was dishonouring him.

Our mother and father brought us into the world. It may not have turned out perfectly how we are raised or that our parents accept us but it is for our own well being that we honor them.                                                                         Gennee
