Why did parents keep baby's gender a secret?

(CNN) -- Recent news about the Toronto parents' decision to keep their baby's gender a secret because they didn't want their child burdened or defined by gender-stereotypical pressure highlights some complex questions about gender.

The amount of condemnation of these parents also spotlights the deep-rooted societal discomfort with gender variance, and the emotional, defensive response that it can generate.

For me, as a child, gender seemed pretty simple. Girls were girls and boys were boys and that's all there was. There was no "other." There was no "none." And it certainly wasn't meant to be a multiple choice question. As I matured and my horizons broadened, however, it became apparent that it's really not that simple.

pebbles

One thing that bugs me is how pepole openly say that doing this "damages" the child in some way :/

Why don't pepole actually assess the impact that the current patriarchal system is having on pepole who grow up on it I'm not even talking about Transsexuals I'm talking about somthing else.

Nobody ever mentions the fact that 94% of the prison population is male. Now I've been exposed to Testotersone and it didn't make me violent. So I can only assume this has somthing to do with how males are begin socialized as I don't belive it's innate or hormonal.

What the hell are pepole doing that turns so many boys into violent criminals? why don't pepole EVER even stop to think of THAT damage?
