Preferred Name on a Resume?

Noah G.

I know there's been a lot of posts related to jobs and job searches and stuff but, to my knowledge, this has never quite been brought up.

I'm currently looking for either a second job or a new job and I found one position to apply for in the former category and will be e-mailing my resume today as I can't make it up there to apply for it in person before they close. My question is: does anyone think that a resume is a place to put one's preferred name (clarifying, of course, that it is a preferred name)?

I would really like to be able to start a new job as Noah if at all possible as I would really like to start transitioning soon, including a legal name change. But should I put that I prefer Noah on my resume? Or save that for any interview(s)?

If it makes a difference at all, it's a health food store I'm applying to.

Incase it needs clarifying (not sure how clear it was above): I would be putting both names on the resume, both my birth/current legal name and my preferred name (probably below it).

I'm not sure how professional it is, but it's possible you could put FirstName "PreferredName" LastName on your resume.

Or put your legal name on the resume and when first meeting the interviewer say something like, "Hi, I'm LegalName but I prefer PreferredName."

Thanks, Adio

I was just looking into this through a Google search (should have probably done that before, I know) and it would seem that, according to the UVM (University of Vermont, who have a PDF of FAQs for Transgender Job Seekers if anyone is interested in it), since a resume isn't a legal document a preferred name can be used. Some people use the method that you suggested, Adio, and some put a first initial and then their preferred name, so it would be, using that format: F. PreferredName LastName. I'm seeing which one I prefer.

I also like your suggestion with the introduction. I may just do both, sort of to just confirm what's said on the resume I guess.

Thanks, Nygeel

That is what I ended up going with. I prefer the first impression of me being "masculine"/"male" when at all possible and, also, it ended up looking better with my birth name and preferred name that way. I put the resume as an attachment, so I ended up signing off on my e-mail the same way because I figured it was a bit rude to not sign the e-mail which, basically, would have been the equivalent of a cover letter in this instance.
