Pride Celebrations?... Haven't We Assimilated?

As we all know, June is Pride Month for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) communities across the country -- and parades abound.

Unlike the revolutionary decade of the 1960s during which the air bred dissent, we LGBTQ people appear to be residing in a sanguine time -- rebels without a cause, a context, or an agenda. Many of us would argue that we have moved from our once urgent state of, "Why we can't wait?" to our present lull state of, "Where do we go from here?"

Have not been to many pride parades, but I get more of the sense that they are mainly a time to celebrate and let the community know that LGBTI folks are here.  They don't seem to be marches for increased civil rights.

Mainly it is an oportunity to show the PTB and buisness comunity that we are a consumer and political bloc in these parts.
Some places it may be more about celebrating diversity or social gains but around here it is a visibility thing more than a celebration thing.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

Corporate sponsorship has done to Pride what it did to Mardi Gras and rock concerts.

Mostly true.

Pride here in the Spokane area is not too bad. But in Pheonix it was horid. Just a mass marketing ploy it seemed to me.

Pride parades today are essentially no different than the various biker rallies (ie. ROT Rally that we have in Austin or some of the others around the country)- they are an opportunity to basically party for a prolonged period of time, while also allowing some newcomers to the scene dip their toes in the waters.

In the interim, you also get some of the feel-good speeches from various peeps who get a microphone and you get some touchy-feely resolutions in some areas from City Councils or even legislatures.  And yeah, you get precisely what tekla has described.

Some people spend a ton of money while others make a ton of money.  Lots of people get drunk and/or sunburned.  The media focuses on the extreme examples of conduct while the masses continue to just go about their life...
