Hi everyone,

I've always heard, "Don't match your eyeshadow color with your eyecolor."  (i.e. no blue eyeshadow if you have blue eyes)

But what about matching eyeshadow to your clothes?  If you're wearing a black shirt, should you not wear brown eyeshadow?  Is it wrong to wear purple eyeshadow with a purple shirt?

I guess I'm not asking if it's right or wrong, rather, what the general rule of thumb is.

eyeshadow should accent your eyecolor to bring out that color. lavander eyeshadow will work with brown eyes to bring out that color. not sure about blues though....

for eyeshadow and shirt/top color...choose a color that matches or coordinates well. just don't match everything together. that's weird.

Personally I have blue eyes boardering on grey and use shades of brown or grey but don't go in for colours. I used to use colours but found it all a bit seventiesish. Given that I am in my fourties it might however be an age thing .

But I haven't heard of what Amy was mentioning.  For myself I use colour that compliments my skin colour more than eye colour.  But that's me.  Earthy tones suite me best so I use a light to dark brown on my lids, and then pale pink to white around the lids to mask of the look of my deep set eyes.  I've tried the smoky colours in the evening, greys, and blues, but that as far as I gotten.

i saw on TV tonight... a commercial for eyeshadow that is automatically color co-ordinated to your eye color for you..... damn next time I'll try to pay attention to what brand....

in answer to your question, No idea... I've always thought blue eyeshadow was sorta tacky, but that might be from growing up in the 80's LOL

I tried some blue eyeshadow at home once and then took it off. Made me look like somebody punched me in both eyes and instead of black and blue they were just blue. I use very subdued colors that compliment my skin. My favorite eyeshadow has three shade of green from very light to forest. It has a little yellow with gold flecks I use the lightest shade for basic lid and then a touch of the medium for the upper part of the lid. It is very subtle.

If I come home and go out for the evening I'll add a touch of the darker green. I have green eyes by the way and the eyeshadow is very complimentory. I never heard this don't use the same color as you eyes stuff either. My wife always says it should compliment your skin.

I agree, some colors (like blue) can look seventy-ish and tacky, but only if you do them wrong.  Granted, I haven't figured out the right way.  But I've started experimenting for two reasons... I'm tired of the colors I've been using, and I've seen enough girls wearing colors (the right way), and it looks good enough that I said to myself, "I've got to learn how to do that look."    I've pretty much exhausted the drugstore brands, so I've turned to some of the more exspensive brands.  Sephora (www.sephora.com) is one of my favorite stores right now.

I first heard the "don't match your eye shadow to your eye color" rule from Bobbi Brown's book Beauty.  (In case anybody's interested, it's a great book... down to earth & meant for realistic women with realistic schedules.)  I've heard the rule several places since then, but I just can't remember where.  I can understand the reasoning behind it.

Alison, the eyeshadow is by Almay and it's called Intsense i-color.  They have a color scheme for my eyecolor (hazel), but when I found it I was already using the same colors... white, light brown, and light pink.  Pink is still my favorite eyeshadow.

I have blue eyes and I love wearing colors.  If, for example, I wear purple I do wear a lavender eyeshadow.  If I wear blue I will put on a baby blue or very pastel blue eyeshadow.  You can down play that by using a gray, not too dark, in the crease of your eye and blend creating a smokey look. (very sexy with blue eyes by the way)  However, if I chose to use the earth tones I will use a black eyeliner along the bottom eyelash area and use a thick mascara that also works.  If you do the tri-color that turns out really good try the tri-pink/rose colors and tri-browns/beige colors.  Use medium shade on eyelid darker shade in the crease and lightest shade just below the eyebrow get a good blender brush and blend away.  Experiment at home and trust me you will get it in no time and look fabulous.  I know it took me forever to learn how to do it and now it takes me 5 mins tops to do total makeup and I look good.  Conceited much? Maybe but oh well.   LOL   Good luck.

I tend to go for the more natural and lighter look.  At times it can look like I am not wearing much in the way of makeup at all but if you swab me with a makeup remover the cloth would come back loaded.

I have long blonde hair and blue eyes.  Mostly I wear pinks and light berry colours although I do delve into a bit more colour when planning to go out.  I have a beautiful red dress and I will match my lip colour and eye shadow colour for full effect.  Although I can line my eyes without making them look too small, I rarely do this because I do not like the look.  I will however, put two coats of mascara on to show off my lashes.

I will do blue eyecolour but only the same shade or a shade lighter as my eyes. If I go too dark I also get the "punched in the eyes" look.  A way around that is too lighten or break up the shade such as vaseline to give it a slick look or even some glitter makeup (both for evening looks only).  Fight eyecolour migration (due to sweat, etc) by using a makeup sealer.  Just be sure to have a remover so you do not scrub off your top layer of skin afterwards.

There doesn't seem to be much consensus on how to properly choose eye color, here are some helpful hints that I have found. 

If you are trying to accent your eyes or make them stunning you should try to complement them (instead of using the same color that they are which will instead make them blend in and be less noticeable).   Here are some suggested colors for various eye colors:
*Blue eyes-- try browns and rose. To make your eyes stand out warm shades will complement best the coolness of blue eyes.
*Brown eyes-- try green and gold.  Both of these shades will pick up the delicate wisps of color in brown eyes.
*Hazel eyes-- Deep greens or a pale yellow/gold.  Again choose either of these colors to accent the wisps of colors found in your eyes.
*Green eyes-- try lavenders and deep mocha brown.  The lavender will contrast the green in your eyes making them look dramatic while the warmer shade of mocha will complement the green providing a more neutral and natural look.

If you instead would like for your makeup to match more of what you are wearing then try to choose something that is more subtle in the outfit (as with the matching color to color you do not want to drown in the same color repetition).  And, as always, a little goes a long way.  In addition, it may also be nice to mix and match several (typically no more than 3) shades together.  Personally I use Mary Kay when I am forced to dress up (biannually or less).  They tend to have some rather nicely matched shadows (and it does help having a sister that is a consultant).  It is also possible to find the same type of product at most stores.  Makeup is similar to painting or wood working.  It takes some time to figure out the best combinations, experimenting is part of the enjoyment, and always have fun when you are doing it (well, besides for when you are using eye lash curlers).

I think blue doesn't work on the entire eylid. What I do is use the natural shades on the upper and lower lid and then the color such as blue with the eyliner. Sometimes I will use a rish blue, green, or plumb shadow as eyliner. It really looks beautiful. I have another eyshadow tip. I always get 4 pack eyeshadow and here is the order of color. The lightest color goes on the brow bone, the next darkest color on the lower lid, the next darkest color in the crease and lower part of the brow bone, and last the darkest color just above the lashes in a narow strip like eyeliner. Sometimes I will put eyliner on first and then the shadow over the top really looks great. Try it. Takes a little practice. I wish I could show you what it looks like.

I had a real great website that showed color theory that is down now. Its pretty complex for me and hard to remember the whys and whats. If I am ever to learn to be a cosmetologist, its something I will want to know. For now I try different ideas, some based off of what I read. I make plenty of mistakes, I am not full time atm and have less experience then many of you. I think I have grown in knowledge though the past year fashion/makeup/nails wise. Its something I really enjoy learning.

Hard part is exceptions. I have blue/grey eyes that there is no real info on colors to match. So I read the color chart on complementary colors, but skin and hair seems to effect the most efficient colors (as well as exceptions like orange/red being poor choices though complimentary since they bring out the blood veins in the eyes as well lol and arent good shadow colors). Then there is the cool/warm colors to worry about, and seasons.

Browns and pinks are popular for blue eyes. Other rule I heard is that you should accentuate either your lips or eyes. In some cases you might not want to contrast your eyes with complementary colors and go with similar shades to your eye color. This would sort of flatten and retract your eyes from focus and you could lead your main focus to somewhere else more flattering. The general rule is to emphasize eyes though, since thats where people look most often, or one wants people to look. Yesterday I saw a young woman with deep blue eyes come in, she had faint pink eyeshadow, deep brown lid shadow/mascara deep brown clothes, and it looked startling and full of beauty. A bit off topic, but I'll answer your question and then lets leave it at that or start a new thread.

Knocking the President and making jokes at his expense is the other National Pastime.(Baseball being number 1). Our president whoever that may be at the time however is like a brother. We can knock him just don't let anybody else try it then feathers get ruffled. Personally I like him, he cna be pretty funny sometimes. I don't agree with many of his policies and I'm not overly thrilled with how he has managed the country. But that is the beauty of our country there is always 2008.

Because of our system in this country it is simply that we can and do if we disagree with one on specific issues.  It is often those public disagreements with issues and circumstances that make monumental changes in this country's laws and actions, foreign or domestic.
