Story by Andrew McCarty (6 April 2024)

Count South Carolina coach Dawn Staley among those who think transgender athletes should be able to compete in women's sports.

Earlier Saturday morning during meeting with reporters, Staley was asked if she thinks transgender women should be allowed to compete. Staley took a sip of water, sat back and thought about her response before finally delivering her thoughts.

"I'm under the opinion of, if you're a woman you should play," she told OutKick's Dan Zaksheske. "If you consider yourself a woman and you want to play sports or go vice versa, you should be able to play. That's my opinion."

She waited for a follow-up question, which she seemed to be anticipating. "Do you think transgender women should be able to compete in women's basketball?" Staley was asked.

"That's the question you want to ask, so I'll give you that. Yes," she said plainly. "Yes. So now the barnstorm of people are going to flood my timeline and be a distraction to me on one of the biggest days of our game - and I'm okay with that, I really am."
