Title: Hair: the source of all evil
Post by: Nygeel on June 23, 2011, 12:02:08 AM
I've been realizing how much I dislike my hair. In many spots it won't come in quick enough. In others it won't go away. In some places it grows in an odd direction or curls.

This is about hair all over the place, not just on my head.

Lately I've been trying to figure out what to do about what's on my head. I'm looking to grow out my curly, poofy, frizzy hair but I don't know what would look good with my face or how the heck I can better take care of my hair to make it tamable (no to straighteners!).

The only angle that worked with my glasses.

I've also thought about using rogaine on my face because...well...there's no dark hair (with the exception of two tiny tiny very thin but visible chin hairs). Does anybody have experience with this?

Have you tried it really short?

Yes, I have.

Not certain about the Rogaine, although I've heard Minoxidil-5% (search for it on amazon) works well. It's actually in Rogaine, but I've heard it does most of the work, and it's cheaper than what I've seen. I can't personally vouch for it (yet), but I have heard it works.

I have incredibly curly hair, and after years of trying to figure out what to do with it longer, I decided to just buzz it all off. Now that it's significantly thinned, due to T and my oh-so-wonderful genetics, I can't let it get much over an inch long before it looks atrocious.

So, even though it's a little boring short, at least the upkeep is cheap--- I bought a Conair hair trimmer at Wal-Mart for 20 bucks and haven't paid for a haircut in 2 years.

I have an odd head shape which hair helps cover up. I've got hair genes to kill for. My dad is in his late 60s and has a full head of hair (even with a poor diet and lots of smoking which I've heard can cause thinning).

The humidity recently has been doing a number.

All it does is poof and curl!

have you tried the same amounts of wax as some africans use to keep their (short) hair flat?

I'm not sure. I have used wax before. It leaves my hair pretty greasy. I've also done frizz-ease. None of which do that good of a job.

Well, from what I can gather, the latest treatment involves using keratin to straighten the hair. Apparently it can be quite expensive though, and only lasts about 2-3 months.

Yea, I can't do a chemical straightener or relaxer. One of the many problems is that I don't know where to start with taking better care of my hair. I know there are special shampoos and conditioners that can help, I just don't know what to use.

Why iron your hair if it is so short? Curly hair cut short tends to point straight anyway.  Your hair reminds me of my brothers. Try getting a fade so that the sides do not poof out like a mushroom and on top you can try using gels to spike it or spike it back.

Buuuut I want to grow it out. When I have used gel it has dried my hair out and it doesn't really spike, just makes a crunchy curl type thingie. (http://26.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lgs8oqzybw1qal7xro1_500.jpg)

Let it grow in a bit and embrace the curls. Mousse is your friend. Curls + Gel = bad. Herbal Essences Mousse....purple bottle, level two or three. It's like three bucks at target. As far as making it go straight...can't help you out...been trying forever. It seems 99% of straightening hair products are designed to be used with a flat iron. Closest and cheapest thing I've ever found was from Sally's Beauty Supply. Beyond the Zone Straightening Shampoo & Cond + Straightening Balm. I won't lie...it still is nothing fabulous but works well in comparison. Also...honestly not quite sure how it even seems to do this, but Nioxin.....that shampoo and conditioner for thinning hair? Yeah, for some reason makes my hair redic less poofy. It also is not cheap though.

Lubriderm body lotion as conditioner. It works.
