A lot of people have asked this question since news broke last week that Amaechi would become the first NBA player to come out publicly as gay. Amaechi, who retired from the league in 2003, answered it Monday.
''I was ready and resilient at this point in my life,'' Amaechi said from New York, where he's doing press for his book, Man in the Middle, which will be released Wednesday. ''I was ready to help. People of good conscience help when they're able.''
Besides, his coming out has little to do with the NBA.
''The NBA is only 400 people,'' he said. ''Maybe it's my arrogance, but I want to affect more people than that.''
