Title: Vitamin Supplements

If you all dont mind helping me again with another question...=)
I was curious about vitamin supplements. Are there any recommended vitamin supplements while on HRT? I already take multivitamins, C, aspirin.... But, I heard that a potassium and possibly a sodium supplement might be good. It was mentioned somewhere that spiro might take a lot of salt out of the body, so a sodium supplement might be good...and what about iron?
Again, I appreciate the help,
Astyria.

Astyria;
You should discuss with your prescribing physician which supplements might or might not be a good idea to take. Depending on what you're being prescribed, you may want to discontinue one or more of the things you're taking or planning on taking.
Please take a moment to review the Terms of Service, (https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,2.0.html) specifically Rule 8.
Sorry to be unhelpful, but staff doesn't want Susans to appear to be a site that condones and aids self-medication. We wish to 'stay on the air' to continue to provide support to the TG community.

It is terribly important to discuss supplements with your endocronologist! My husband can not take a multivitamin. They all have iron in them and he has a hereditary problem with his liver. Any additional iron would do damage to his liver. I have a situation where I should not consume additional vitamin D. So, as it turns out, neither of us can take multivitamins.
Yes, believe it or not, supplements can damage you. Just because they are "all natural" doesn't mean they can be used indiscriminately.

Do not take any potassium supplements while on HRT with out blood tests and a doctors approval. This can be very dangerous and even fatal. Ask you doctor these questions and read all material supplied by your pharmacy. HRT consists of very powerful drugs and only a doctors care can ensure your safety.

Absolutely NO potassium on spiro!!! It's a "potassium sparing" drug which means that it while your body is passing other minerals it is holding onto the potassium. This also includes being careful about eating foods high in potassium. As Beth mentioned it is very dangerous.....
Absolutely discuss ALL and ANY supplements you take or are thinking of taking with your endocrinologist as Cindi mentioned. I think there is a complacency about OTC (over the counter) medications and supplements. Some of these combined with HRT can have deadly results.
My own personal rule, whether you are on HRT or not, a low dose aspirin a day is a potential life saver. This is, of course, unless you have a condition which prevents taking it.

A low dose aspirin is generally good for many people.... unless you have a potential for acid reflux or ulcers... ;) Can we do anything anymore without a doctor involved?
And the answer is: eat your fruit and vegetables ;)

Sorry for breaking a rule, but I dont consider vitamins to be medications, i dont even consider them over the counter medications (but guess that they probably fall within that category)...which is why i asked. I do plan on asking my endo, but my next appointment with her is in June...that's the soonest.
But thank you all for answering,
Astyria.

Asking the phamacist where you get your scrips filled could help you with this. Although they don't know your full history, they can tell you what will interact with what and in what ways.

Hi Everyone:
Well I'm the vitamin lady as Steph calls me. I am a firm believer in supplements as considering the condition of our modified veggies that we get now a days you cannot get all that you need from todays fare. Watch the sodium (that goes for everyone), there is so much added sodium to "everything" we eat (even without picking up the salt shaker) that you would soon be over the recommended daily dose.
Steph use to say to me "I don't need vitamins, I eat salads, fruits everyday". Well she changed her mind when she went through that last infection from the surgery. I started pumping her with C and and D and now she's been taking them everyday.
Yup, supplements we all need them.
