We Want Cake, Too

A few years ago, I did an article on a ventriloquists' convention in Fort Mitchell, Ky., home to 8,000 souls and the Vent Haven Museum, where dummies go to die.

As a transgender woman, I felt strangely at home at this convocation of adorable misfits. Not only were there guys walking around with puppets, there was a Puppet Ministry run by a preacher who sold his own line of dummies (Satan was the most expensive).

But if transgender people are sometimes at odds with their gay and lesbian allies, they're also at odds with themselves. The community is rife with disagreements about whether transsexuals (individuals who change, or wish to change, their gender via medical intervention, and whom some define as simply having a "birth challenge" like, say, a cleft palate) even ought to be grouped, politically, with "transgenders" (an umbrella term that includes cross-dressers and drag queens).

When I read this I thought about the countless comments here that prove just that.  We can't agree on anything.  How are we ever going to get anything done?

Satan was the most expensive

But of course, the devil is a man of wealth and taste.

Quote from: Valeriedances on August 13, 2011, 09:20:40 PMForget trans definitions, we cant agree on what male/female is.

If it makes you feel any better, even the laws of the natural world itself don't seem to be in very good agreement on what male/female is.  That's probably why transgender and intersex people exist to begin with.

Quote from: Lisbeth"The cake is a lie"

I always tell myself this.  I believe it is important to remind oneself that the cake is a lie, even when in fact it is not.

I've had "the cake is a lie" as my sig for several months.

I never trust a man with a puppet.  I think this goes back to something from my childhood, but it's a philosophy that has never led me astray.

How about us finding five things that we DO agree on?.                                                                                                 Gennee

I agree that:

1)  The cake is a lie.
2)  I really like cake.
3)  Cake tastes good.
4)  I might actually be a little crazy about cake.
5)  The cake is only good if it is made out of real sugar and not that fake substitute which tastes like metal.

I agree that:

1)  The cake is a lie pretty expensive.
2)  I really like cake.
3)  Cake tastes good.
4)  I might actually be a little crazy about cake.
5)  The cake is only good if it is made out of real sugar crabs and not that fake substitute which tastes like metal, but real Jumbo Lump Blue Crab from around Maryland.

I'll also agree that lobster makes a pretty good second choice, but not as a cake, I'm thinking more like a thermidor.

This is all based on Chinese whispers. I'm afraid actually:

The cake is alive.
Retribution will be swift.
And sickly*.

*by which I mean sugary-sweet, not sickle-like. Though...

I'm heading out to the coast in a few hours, guess I'll have to stop and get some crab cakes to go.  It won't be the blue crab, but it will be fresh.

Gosh, I WANT TO EAT IT --- then have some more please?!

Yummy!

PS: cake was made to eat, not to be had... my 2 cents
