Title: Be-All Religion panel
Post by: Bracha on February 16, 2007, 09:36:56 AM
I run this list for Orthodox Jewish (and formerly Orthodox) transfolk, and we started talking a while ago about having a RL get-together. We decided to do it during Be-All (http://www.be-all.org), which is in Chicago at the end of May this year.

One of the things we thought about was that we're not the only transpeople who are committed to a religion where a lot of our coreligionists give us a hard time. Or would, if they knew about us. So we started talking to the Be-All organizers about having a general panel thing on religion and TSity.

I don't know if anyone here is planning on being at Be-All this year, but if you are, and you think you might be interested in being part of a panel like this, let me know. Either on the board or via e-mail (my address is in my profile).

Hi, Bracha. I just finished reading your post. I see that you are interested in spiritual things. I'm a Christian but I have always admired the fervor and zeal that you have. I would like to know more about Be-All and your beliefs.

Always?  Have we met?

Actually, I've never been to any trans events.  We just figured that since we're having a get-together, it might be nice to do it in conjunction with something like this.  And from what I've heard Be-All is a fairly nice one.  Also, as a purely selfish thing, I live in Chicago, and the event is in the Chicago area.  But also, getting kosher food is fairly easy in Chicago, so it's a good choice for us.

As far as my beliefs, I'm an Orthodox Jew.  We were given the Torah by God at Mt. Sinai a bit over 33 centuries ago, and we've been learning it and passing it on from generation to generation ever since.  What in particular were you wondering about?

I'd like to know more about the gathering. Also, if non Orthodox Jews are allowed on the list you mentioned, I'd be interested to know more about that as well. Thanks!

Well, right now, we're working on getting things going.  There's not a whole lot to tell yet.  About the list... well, it's for Jews who are Orthodox or who used to be Orthodox.  There are other lists, like Trans-Jews (https://www.susans.org/Spirituality/Mailing_Lists/5427.html) and TransJews (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/transjews/), for trans Jews just in general.  Though I think the first of those, which was on Queernet, may have died during the server crash a year and a half ago.  A lot of lists never got recreated after that.

I was subscribed to both of those, am still on TransJews although it isn't very active. I never heard if Trans-Jews resurfaced after the computer crash.
