I love the law when it accomplishes justice. Amber Yust went to her local Motor Vehicle Department to get a new license, and in the mail received, not her license, but a personal letter from the clerk saying that "homosexual acts" are "an abomination that leads to hell."

I used to carry a GOOHF at all times. It looks like I need to start doing it again:

Can she use the $50K to buy her way into heaven?

I am currently pondering how to bait fundamentalist-religious DMV employees into sending me similar letters so I can properly fund my transition.

This is great news. Poetic justice, which is one of the more endearing features of some aspects of the US legal system.
Here, the only people to get awarded those sort of sums would be aristocrats or very prominant public figures.
Having a public official abusing his access to what is, confidential information, to propout his own psycho views is completely unacceptable and somewhat terrfying.

I'd be tempted to post him back some Islamic tracts refuting Christianity. But then I am >:-) and love stuffing bigots around.

Not so here. You can be an average everyday person and spill hot coffee on yourself at McDonalds and later find yourself independently wealthy.

I'm still waiting for a morbidly obese person to try to force McDonalds to pay for their bypass surgery.
It is going to happen, one day. Mark my words.

Not to stand up for lawyers or anything but the McDonald's suit that everyone used to point out stupidity was valid. That cup of coffee caused THIRD DEGREE BURNS because McDonald's required franchisees to serve coffee at 180–190 °F (82–88 °C). No one expects that a beverage would be served at such a high temprature. The resulting 3rd degree burns (mostly on her labia and clitoris and anus) resulted in 8 days of hospitalization for skin grafts and two more years of medical treatment.
But here is what really sank the clown's food joint:
Other documents obtained from McDonald's showed that from 1982 to 1992 the company had received more than 700 reports of people burned by McDonald's coffee to varying degrees of severity, and had settled claims arising from scalding injuries for more than $500,000. McDonald's quality control manager, Christopher Appleton, testified that this number of injuries was insufficient to cause the company to evaluate its practices.
That is what made it negligence, because they could not argue that it was unforeseen, indeed, it makes them responsible, because they did know.

Most people in SF were shocked by this. We didn't know we even had a religious person left in the city.

I seem to remember something about God now accepting IOU's. Heaven is getting a little lonely.

Or art galleries (a much better use). The Catholic Church had to sell 3 churches here (and the complete properties) to settle claims of sexual abuse by priests, and they were all bought by the Art Institute for use as galleries and instruction. SF has always had - and this is a damn proud tradition too - seating for more people in bars then in the churches.

So this time it was "Go to hell and PAY $50K" or more.
A friend of mine got $400K.

Oh many of these settlements were in the millions because they were able to prove that the church knew about these priests and did nothing other than move them to another parish.
