Title: Top Surgery Travel Question
Post by: xAndrewx on September 04, 2011, 01:46:24 AM
Okay so I live about 3 hours from Dr. Garramone and if I can cut down a bit on costs I'll be able to get it done sooner. I'm wondering if those of you who have had surgery would know if it would be realistic to be able to handle a car trip probably stretched out in the back with pillows and blankets or in the front with the chair down the evening following surgery then come back again for the drains being removed.

I wouldn't have to save cash for food and a hotel which could save me $1,000 or $2,000 that way plus I figure although the car trip won't be pleasant I will be more comfortable healing at home where I can set things up to be able to pretty much stay in bed and not have to ask for help every five minutes. Also if I have to stay up there I'll have to schedule it around when my mom can go with me and she would have to take time off of work when she really can't. Opinions?

I would think you would be okay. I had surgery on my jaw before where essentially they break and reset it. I was out of work for almost 7 weeks. I was swollen unbelievably...you couldn't even reconigize me and I made a 2 hour drive home after surgery. They gave me morphine before I left and I also got my pain meds filled by my gf before we left the hospital. The pain meds they gave me while in the hospital lasted through the ride home and everything was fine. As long as you are not the one driving, I would assume you'd be fine. Granted, I haven't had top surgery yet, but aside from some possibly slight discomfort, I would think you would be okay.

I had my top surgery back at the end of May with Dr. McLean.  I live about 4 hours from his clinic.  I stayed one night and then my mom drove me home the next morning.  Immediately after the surgery, I was pretty tired.  I ate a little bit but I ended up falling asleep pretty quick (the painkillers helped lol).  So I think as long as you could get into a semi-comfortable position in the car, you'd be just fine going home instead of staying.  That's just my experience.  Hope it helps.  Good luck with your surgery, I hope it goes well :)

After my surgery, the drive locally was nothing.  I just put a pillow between me and the seat belt.  I think the 3 hours is doable, especially if you can sleep during that time. The top surgery in my opinion was a piece of cake, the lipo on the other hand....

I think you would do perfectly fine and you can always try to get the surgery time at a time that works well for you for traffic, etc.   When I was talking to the office, they said Dr. Garramone can do 4 surgeries a day.  Guess that and schedule times may depend on who is getting lipo?  Not sure, but you can always try to work it out with them.  They are very good at working with people if they can.  Also, the surgery is not done in Sunrise, so if you live in Southern Florida your drive time will be less.  It was in a city just South of Hollywood and Dania Beach.

Hey thanks for the responses everyone.  :) My surgery date will be depending on how much I can save and how much my family can let me borrow but it is looking like, since I won't need to save more than $6,500 or so, that I will be able to have enough to get surgery in the next 6 months to a year. I'm planning way ahead, I know. I have a few more questions but I'll try looking them up before bugging y'all with more questions. Thanks again guys!
