I'm not Bulgarian, but here's something you might enjoy :) (I sang some of this at a voice camp last month, I think it's lovely).

I was born in Serbia (at the time it was Yugoslavia). As a kid though I moved to Germany, then Alaska, where I live now.

Aquarella (2014)
Dean1229 (2013)

We had a couple of former members, one was named Valentina, the other was borislava (borislavka), but they are gone now.  I think goldilocks may have been bulgarian.

I hope a few more identify themselves.

I think we need to remember how difficult is was for anybody in the GLBT community during the years of the Soviet hegemony.  Bulgaria has a developing economy and a new social structure to go with closer ties to the European Union.

I really applaud those members of ours from the old Eastern Bloc.  They are on the leading edge of freedom and tolerance in places that seriously lacked those things for many years.

Yup. And my ammo is from Factory 10. It's a '92 head stamp so it was produced after the factory moved. I also now have roughly 5 circle 21 magazines which are Bulgarian surplus and still have the military inspection stamps on them.

I knew a mtf person, called "borislavka"... we used to chat long time ago in the only bulgarian forum (which I made, but gave it to other people to manage), also in skype, but she suddenly disappeared... I don't know what happened... Someone told me, she moved to Italy and had a surgery in Thailand, but I don't know if it's true...

BTW, I don't know what you've heard about Bulgaria, but the only nice thing here is the nature... Sadly, soon it will be completely damaged by the ugly and tasteless hotels and resorts of the bulgarian mafia and their living habits as well...

It is good to know, that someone knows the real situation in this part of the world - thank you for the post, Emily :) I hope more people to see it...

Right now I am in process of changing my ID and it is a total absurd...
In the first place, here no doctor will prescribe hormones without changed ID and you cannot change ID without HRT...
There is no administrative order to do it, so you need a lawyer, who have to take the case to the court and eventually, after an expert opinion from sexologist, the court will give you a permission to change the ID... So, I have the lawyer, the case is taken to the court and now I am just waiting...

I won't even mention how the people here treat the LGBT-persons... As soon as I have my new ID, I will look for my way out of this country...

I like to think that I know a little more than the average US citizen about Bulgarian history and culture. My boss and 3 coworkers are all born and raised in Bulgaria so I hear many stories. Considering my company is under 20 people it will make coming out and transitioning a little interesting.
Considering they left Bulgaria for a reason I hope their minds are more open to the LGBT community.
I wish you a safe transition and hope you find yourself in a country where you feel comfortable living as yourself!

Emily, where are you that they require that?

Here (Alaska) you can change your drivers license/ID with just a letter, no surgeries.

Prior 2004 here, in Bulgaria, it was the same - you cannot do anything without surgery, but thanks to some lawyers, there were several cases, which lead to the change and surgery is not (always) required. Of course, such cases here are just like the lottery... :( I know that last year there was a FTM, who was rejected by the court, despite he had HRT and everything else, except surgery... Obviously it depends of how good is the lawyer and how lucky are you...

So, Emily, I am also curious where are you living?
