Title: In lieu of such seriousness...nail polish!
Post by: Sevan on September 20, 2011, 11:21:47 PM
So....we did such an amazing job not drifting and actually getting this whole new sub forum created (amazing!!) that I thought of an idea that...may be a little silly. (though I'm slightly serious though...not all that much.)

I was painting my nails the other night and I stopped at just my thumb. Got bored with it.

I've found I do this alot! I'll only do one thumb. No real reason...other than not wanting to get too serious with it. It got me thinking about the peircing in the right ear of gay men back in the way back. (here in the states. Not sure if that was an international "tell")

So maybe...we androgyns can know each other by only painting one finger, or one hand!!

Whatcha think?

Just our luck...it'd catch on and everyone would do it. We're just that cool. ;)

i also often paint only my thumb, so i would do it as long as i can paint my thumbs in a different color on the days when i really want to paint all my nails

I have to paint them all; I can't stand to see the job 1/2 finished

On another note - has anyone ever used that "hard as nails" polish? I accidentally bought that once and tried to remove it before going to work and it WAS NOT coming off..... panic mode set in because the clock was ticking..... but i eventually got it off and made it to work :P

I often only do one hand, mostly because I suck at left-handed nail-painting. I also tend to paint only the nails on my big toes, because the other nails are so little.

I'm totally up for this. ;D

Hmm.  I love toenail polish, to the point where I think my feet look weird without it.

Have not done it on my fingernails though for more than a minute.  I've thought maybe someday I would but the day hasn't come yet.  I was maybe going to paint them teal to match elements of our taiko uniforms during the big Japanese festrival, but we had costume changes during our set that would have made it not match.

Maybe I'll try the thumb thing though...

I've seen a tutorial on youtube on how to do that newsprint style! Very cool. Though I'd still think to only do one....but maybe I could stand to sit still and focus and get all the nails done.

Right now my right thumb (I'm left handed) is painted sparkly shimmery light pink. Kinda fun. I only did it because I did my puppies nails in that color so...figured I'd do mine. (no I never have done her nails before...just got a random thought to do it. lol)

different colors on the hands or thumbs should also work for making a fashion statement for those who have the patience to paint all their nails

Oh definitly!
Also...if you're going to take the time to paint your nails..you're then stuck with only one color? Oh no. That's not very androgyn at all!!

All this talk and I think I need to go change my thumb color. I'm tired of sparkly pink. Maybe dark purple...I've been thinking of trying a marble effect. Looks very cool.

That is seriously cool. Could be nice using chinese, cyrillic or arabic script too.

Went through a phase of wearing nail polish years ago but gave up as I bite my nails though not short, not a nice habit. Theoretically a no no in Islam too although hardly anyone seems to bother about that. Just my excuses for not making the effort really.

There's a swirly gunmetal color I like on my toes.  Tried it on my thumbnails and... no, don't like it.  Right now I just have clear base coat on my thumbnails and not sure I like that either, but it's not as uncomfortable.  Not sure I'm going to get far on this.

Would gladly do each toe in a different color though. :D

I sometimes paint my nails but I get far too frustrated at my inability to create a creamy finish. I'll get someone else to do them properly sometime for a special occasion or something.

i always paint all my nails, but i will still end up with only a few nails having colour on them at some point as I never go to the bother of using nail varnish remover and the stuff chipps off some fingers faster than others XD.

I invented a trick.

Since i am poor and cant afford quality nail polish, i learned that if I paint my nails in some color, then as it starts to peel off on its own, paint another coat over it of a different color, and so on, as the paint is falling off you get strange and cool looking designs.

Like, the paint doesnt fall off the regularly, so the parts in which it fell and the parts of the new paint which are falling, get some nice designs.

Another thing I do is to paint for ex a solid colour all my nails, then using a thin brush paint lines or designs on the other nails.
It's artistic.

I've never heard of this hard as nails nail polish before. I gave up doing my fingers long ago because work is too hard on them. Maybe that would help.

I really like your trick ZaidaZadkiel and will put it to good use.

I painted my nails yesterday (only my right hand though. Being left handed...I got bored, and didn't want to fight with my left hand)

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi13.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa300%2Fcandiussell%2F63be4703.jpg&hash=a1f64649211ed3b5dc5a2409c5dbe97ec5734fcb)

It's water marbled. I base coated in white, then did a marble of sparkly pink, blue and dark purple. T'was fun :)

I'd happily paint my fingernails as well as my toes, but my fingernails are much wider than they're tall, so painted, they look really daft, sigh...

That is really cool Sevan! I wish I could have my finger nails painted, but thats not really in the cards for me right now. At least I can paint my toes! (or at least my wife does anyways lol) they are dark shade of blue at the moment =)

Seven - Wow those nails are amazing.  I like painting my nails but hate removing it so I often have nails where the polish has come partly off and I just go over the whole nail again.  I seem to have misplaced my purple nail polish so I'll be getting some more soon my currently pink blotches on three of my nails are almost non existant I sometimes do 2 different colors but normaly just all purple

I heard about this on the radio the other morning driving home from work - it's nail polish for men. Thoughts?

If you want to see some really ridiculous marketing for mens' nail polish, look up Alpha Nail.  To me it just highlights how arbitrary and shallow society's concept of gender is.

I tend to wear silver/greys, blues and purples mostly.  Right now my big toes are silver and the other toes are purple.

I have tons of nail polish, but I only use it once or twice a year, usually on my toenails or on just my thumb or pinky fingernails. I like black, blue, silver, purple, or anything sparkly.

As I prep for Pride I decided to attempt to paint my nail like our trans* flag :D (just my right thumb...as per my usual!)
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi13.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa300%2Fcandiussell%2Fb8fe38af.jpg&hash=69852f39880d94f5102de47f7fc98d3974f3a623)

and since the trans* flag is our design...you likely haven't seen it before (though I certainly hope you dig it!!) so here it is:

I don't know if anyone is still doing this thread...but I just wanted to post that I also LOVE nail polish.  My nails didn't really used to grow that much and I had this awful habit of chewing them but I started taking calcium supplements and now they grow SO FAST!

Anyway I guess I have about ten colors and I tend to go for the darker colors.  I mean I have a few sparkly ones but they're still dark.  Purple, blue, even green, and dark red.  I love them but it can be a huge pain.

I've used that hard as nails stuff but NOT the polish itself, lol.  I use the clear coat and it really, really helps the polish last a while.  I love it for that.  Sometimes I'll use it just to have something.  Sadly, there used to be a matte version instead of the shiny one, which I kind of preferred but I can't find it any longer.  So, I have vaguely shiny nails all the time now, whether it's just clear or not.

I love nail polish too and have actually thought about doing just one thumb, or a thumb and a finger
before, just to see what kind of reaction I get from people.  Partially because it takes more patience
than I have sometimes to do the full set, and it's hard to do my right hand with my left and get it
looking right.

Also, it always seems like 2 seconds later I do something and manage to chip one of them.  It takes
a lot of practice I think to have nice nails and do things in a way that won't screw them up.  But if
you just have 1-2 nails done, you can always do stuff with the non-painted fingers.

I have copper magnetic polish on my toes right now.  It's less cool than I hoped for.  The magnet on the cap is supposed to make a wavy pattern in it but it's so subtle as to almost not even be there.
