LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Less than two weeks before the U.S. military repealed its "don't ask don't tell" policy, an Army National Guard veteran received her official discharge papers for being transgender. Now, she hopes to change military policy.

Staff Sgt. Rebecca Grant was involved in tours in Iraq and Bosnia and received many honors for her 12 years of service. Last April, she said she was outed by a fellow soldier who passed around pictures he found of her wearing a dress. Grant said that's when things went downhill.

The Louisville Fairness Campaign is drawing attention to the exclusion of gender identity from the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy and a soldier who was discharged for being transgender.

Staff Sergeant Rebecca Grant was discharged from the Army National Guard after serving for over a decade. She did tours of duty overseas,  including Bosnia and Iraq.

In 2009, a fellow soldier revealed that Grant is transgender, and she was officially kicked out of the military two weeks before the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" this month.

A soldier who served in the Army National Guard for a decade and was discharged two weeks before "don't ask, don't tell" was removed from service because she is transgender.

Staff Sergeant Rebecca Grant toured overseas in Bosnia and Iraq. In 2009, a fellow soldier revealed that Grant is transgender, leading to her official discharge earlier this month. While she told WFPL News in Louisville, Ky., that getting rid of "don't ask, don't tell" is a positive step in the right direction, she added that there's still no protection for transgender people serving in the military.
