Title: Have the young people under 35 taken over this board?
Post by: Mahsa Tezani on October 14, 2011, 07:53:43 PM
I feel as of the past 3 weeks. There's a definite younger presence on Susans. Most of all are below 35 and we're becoming the majority of the board.

Discuss or rebuttal.

It seems that way to me, although we should all be giving a bit of respect to those who are older. They've been alive longer and have the most wisdom after all. Generally, anyway.

And isn't that a good thing in the long run? In my eyes that appears to be a sign that younger people are coming to terms with themselves more easily when it comes to gender.

Then again, I'm a youngin', so what do I know?

Respect is an earned right and is not given.

Perhaps I'll rephrase my statement to "Everyone should be given a bit of respect unless they prove they are not worth it." Yes, I believe that's more what I was trying to get at :).

Don't worry, I'm a kind tyrant.

i think it has to do with a couple of things:

The world is becoming more accepting of trans and alternate gender identities. It's not the best right now, but compared to the 70s, 80s, and 90s today has gotten better.

Also, the internet has been a great catalyst for all people to learn more about transitioning and to be involved in more internet related trans topics. It seems that younger people uses the internet, on average, more than someone...say...in their middle ages.

So I think that has something to do with a larger younger group.

I don't see that :/

All I see are more teenagers supporting gay pride, thanks to people like Lady Gaga and the "It Gets Better" project.
No one knows what the ->-bleeped-<- transgender people are, but they "support" it.

Sure, nobody knows about it, but people aren't instinctively repulsed by it.

I found nothing but acceptance after coming out in high school, with one exception: the 60-year old principal.

Things are getting better, and it's myopic not to realize and appreciate it.

I think that's regional. Where I'm at, the younger crowds who embrace gay and lesbian pride also cheers on trans people. But I totally see where you are coming from. I know some places where your scenario is sad but true

A high school "transgirl" rides the same bus that my middle school daughter shares so Michelle declares "he dresses like a girl, pink tank top and all", and because "he" also likes boys THAT makes him "gay" not "trans"?

Well, I'm looking at her, thinking if that's the case, what "he" in fact says, then what do you really think of me? Such confusion, at such a young age, we've all been there before and it's not for us "older folks" to give the answers, ya need to figure it out for yerselves and It Does Become Amusing At Times,

The way this thread went way off track I'd say the 15 Second attention span generation is winning   ;D

I think the seeming shift in demographics has a lot to do with today's lifestyles. For us dinosaurs, I'd guess most of our lives were well set on a path of no return by the time we got out of h/s or university. You could not wait until the day came when you can leave the nest and not ever again have to deal with that "As long as you are living under this roof..." dreaded line from your parents. Knowing how much they "encouraged" you to be out on your own they had to be glad also. You got a job, married, divorced, married again, 2.3 kids etc..  Today, I am pretty much shocked by how a large number 30 somethings can have no idea what they want of their life. A lot has changed in 30-40 years.

Many of us old folks simply feel trapped by our choices. We stuff, suppress, and beat the monster down often with a fair amount of success for decades. Long before Al Gore invented the internet TG sites existed, developed followings, and we all slowly learned that we weren't the only one (besides Christine Jorgensen)  in the world who felt this way. (BTW - I've been lurking at Susan's for almost as long as there has been a Susan's. Just too afraid of the consequences of reconsidering for a third time what I should be doing with my life)

Today, there are other viable options,  besides suicide, that are realizable. Best to consider before fixing a course for your life, while the freedom is there to choose. Life does get in the way of life.

In a sense, I think it is a healthy sign for society in general that there are youngins here.

Oh I think they are being actively prevented from doing much.  Lower educational standards in combination with almost crippling levels of debt from loans and the technological advances that have eliminated a lot of entry level jobs is almost a perfect storm.

Yup.

In addition, there's the glut of college students majoring in liberal arts fields where there's not enough work for the number of people graduating.  Conversely, there are not enough students going into needed fields like engineering and the sciences (my company has a shortage of like 40-50 software engineers that it can't fill, for example).  Then there's the delayed retirements among the older generation causing a huge glut of workers.

There's also the disgustingly rich, who, in widening the gap so extremely between rich and poor are destroying the middle class.  The middle class spending money is what created most of the jobs that are now gone or going.  Without that money, chains of stores and restaurants are going out of business, destroying more and more jobs, and further destroying the middle class.  It's going to be a very ugly chain reaction and it's going to happen very fast.

Certainly isn't going to be an easy solution to this problem.  :\

What someone peers say often determine their world view at their age. I know I've had no issues with jr/high school girls. I've talked to them about fashion and stuff... But I remember when I saw trans people at that age I was confused at times, but I was also fascinated. Basically middle/high school and to an extent, college girls are coming into the world. I think younger kids are more used to trans people more so than my generation. I know we didn't have any at either of my high school... Besides myself and I had like 3 people say nasty stuff to me all year when I was experimenting back in high school.

I'm under 35 and I too worship Massonna. Totally running things up in here.

On the real, having lurked for much longer than I've been registered, it doesnt seem like there's an age imbalance. I guess maybe I've noticed more young transguys than transgirls, but I think maybe that's because there's more info now than ever before and the initial stages are seen to be easier for FTMs.
I dont think there's an age problem really at all.

Certainly isn't going to be an easy solution to this problem.  :\
The ancient Athenians would never agree to taking a wage from someone else on anything like a permanent basis, seeing it as what it is a form of slavery.

I don't think any of us are taking a wage, we are just choosing not to retire, not to cut back - we really do love what we do (to the point that we all refer to it as a 'sickness').  That, combined with my generation being a lot healthier to a much later point in life means those jobs/positions are not opening up as fast as they used to.

Or are you suggesting that we go back to the old days, when we had two and a half/ three people in the front office?  Computers, smart phones, iPads and all that kind of technology now makes it possible for one person to do that job.  But, and here's the rub, those other one to two positions were training for the big one, and now that's not possible.  When we pick a new house manager we're not going to have anyone who had trained for that here, we're going to have to go out and find someone who has already been (with success) a house manager somewhere else.

It was very slow in the beginning for all that technology to replace people - in fact in the beginning it took additional people just to manage and operate it.  But, almost overnight, everything clicked into place, there was no need for computer people anymore as just about everyone had those basic skills, and the technology became much more user friendly, and poof - no more entry level jobs.

I've experienced the same thing.  I'm the only transfeminine person at our school, whereas there are four transmasculine folks (two FtM and two androgyne).  I get the feeling that more AMAB people are transitioning in their late twenties, as opposed to those who are AFAB, for whom I've seen a glut transitioning during their late teens and early twenties.

One of the major problems I face is succession planning.

We (royal we) have not had the opportunity to train you youngies to the level that you need to step in to take over our jobs. It is a major problem. I have 30+ experience in my job, the nearest  successor has five.  It is a problem right throughout professional careers. It isn't about competency, it is about experience.

When s**t happens I do not need people reaching for the manual of what to do when s**t happens. I need them to know what to do. it is called experience. Sadly 'we' have failed that; but even worse, we have not educated people to a level that they can realise that.

Am I just an old cow lamenting in her field? I don't think so.

I think I see pretty clearly, and I see it in may sectors; except possibly in the armed forces. Always seems to be another General, not always another oncologist.

Cindy,
You are not; "Am I just an old cow lamenting in her field?"
My belief is, it is far broader and more extensive than industry believes. It's not only applicable to your medical fraternity, it is widespread in the electronics industry; and from experience of the "down sizing, out sourcing" phenomena witnessed in the late 90's, it has left an indelible mark throughout all of capitalism.

I speak with electronic related industries daily, on the lack of knowledge and understand of industry principles. I waste 10's hours weekly, attempting to understand signal component errors emanating from broadcast sites that are being monitored by people who, when looking at monitoring equipment, should be able to give a one word, or at most, two word description of a signals deficiency.

In the life of a television picture, from point of origin to final reception, there is over 175,000 places a signal can fail. At least now, I'm getting better at defining specific areas of signal failure when diagnosed by inexperienced personal as; "your signal looks like 'chicken wire'" Highly descriptive, amazingly imaginative but oh so profoundly useless and inept.

Hope you have some answers.
Happy training
Catherine

Bingo.

Take my field for example - IT. Back about 25 years ago when I began my career businesses weren't hung up on having someone come thru the door with a handful of certs and years of experience in technologies "x", "y", and "z" like they are today. They looked for people that knew some of it and had an aptitude for learning the rest, and they provided training to fill in the gaps. It was a pretty good deal - businesses got a steady supply of cheap people, and the people got hands on experience and training.

Today businesses do not want to invest in training people - they want someone that already has the knowledge and experience; and they expect to pay 3rd world wages for it. Tech changes fast; you can spend years learning something and by the time you get out of school what you've learned may be obsolete. You've spent years of your life and all you have to show for it is a piece of paper and crushing school loans - you don't have any experience, and thus you can't get a job. Meanwhile employers scream that they "can't find qualified candidates" while they shift work overseas to take advantage of coolie labor rates.

Now, back to the topic at hand. I'm one of the older people you speak of (48) and like someone said i've already covered most of the ground that you youngsters are now plowing for the first time. Each generation gets its turn and it's now your turn at the helm; us old fogies are off to party and to spend your inheritance :)

That was kinda mean. Many leave not to join a "white glove society" but because they felt that they had learned what they needed to know.

Oh yeah.

I'm such a rebel. I conform.

But all joking aside. I am the kind of person who was strange when I was a boy, now that I am a woman. I want to be part of the binary, I want to conform to societies standards. I want to be some consumerist housewife... I've essentially seen both sides.

Omigosh, you two are adorbs!

I can't do the housewife thing either.  I need to get out of the house, get into structure, and be productive.  I feel like I'm stagnating otherwise.  So, I'm a single mother working her ass off during the day and momming it up on week nights.  I get my weekends off from parenting, which is just fine by me. 8)

Oh, the topic is us winning.  Viva le revolution!  Buck the system!  Down with stuff and that other stuff that's been around awhile or something.  ::ADD kicks in:: Time to play more video games...

Oh Sailor_Saturn,

Nice try ..... but here in the Land of Oz, we use the PAL TV system. That leaves us the brightness, contrast and chroma to play with. BUT most importantly  .......   the ON/OFF switch ... is on the remote (in my hand haha)

(Oh dear - I think it's one of those nights again. Must be getting close to Catherine's HRT meds)

Be safe, well and happy
