Title: Helpful tip for those who still shave their face :3
Post by: Joeyboo~ :3 on October 19, 2011, 11:40:32 PM
For those like me who get very tight flakey skin after shaving.
It's because most shaving gels/cream are very drying.

So i found out the best way to go in with a razor is to use a 'conditioning' product.
I use Head and Shoulders conditioner(Classic Clean) as a 'shaving gel' for mah fayce.

It's great because it's a silicone based product and it's designed for the formulation of the scalp and skin.

It will insure that your face is moisturized and that it will cover your face in a layer of silicone.
So when you pass the blade over it, it doesn't go into the skin, it'll glide over it as you shave.

It also softens the hair, so it makes a lot of sense to use a conditioning product like that.
This product isn't likely to irritate anyone unless they're allergic to silicone.

A funny tingly feeling is normal at first :)
You've never put conditioner on your face before.
:D

i hope this works for everybody and i made someone a happy camper when they read this xD
I reaaaaally want someone to try this out.
I swear it works!

Edit: If you don't want to go out to buy a bottle of Head and Shoulders conditioner, you can try using the one you use already.
BUUT be careful.
There's certain ingredients to stay away from.
Like salicylic acid.
You don't wanna burn the hell out of your face while you shave.

...so i really recommend just getting what I said. lol

Not bad advice! I personally use lotion (St. Ives, renewing, collegen elasticity) underneath the shaving cream. It allows for some pretty close and slick shaving.

I used the old school "Afta", after I shave. Shower that off and than use Lotion. Lubiderm, Daily Moisture.

Another tip. Dipping your razor in rubbing alcohol makes the little buggers last longer. Also cleans off the blade, thus a closer shave, while shaving.

Another plus with the above. Safer to shave with just one razor over multiple body areas.

You girls do know not to use the same razors on your face, as you do your face?

I 2472% endorse http://www.gillette.com/en/us/Products/Razors/proglide/fusion-proglide-power-razor.aspx (http://www.gillette.com/en/us/Products/Razors/proglide/fusion-proglide-power-razor.aspx)

The razor cartridges are a TAD pricey but I thoroughly rinse the razor each time
and have been able to get a very good shave out of a single cartridge for two weeks.
Then I use the used cartridge for another week shaving my legs, pits et cetera.
Every night before I go to bed, I smear some, not that I like to drop label names
Equate' "Aloe Cool and Fresh" lotion on the offending area.
The next morning I have no problem getting a close, comfortable shave.

Heh, thats the same blade i use. :]
It's amazing.

I don't really wanna go around saying things people might already know.
But just in case:

Shaving during/after a warm shower is always the best time. The hairs are softer and your pores are more open.
aaand
Exfoliating before shaving is also recommended because it gets rid of all the dead skin on your face that can get caught in the razor as you shave.

Gillette has a facial cleanser that is supposed to help soften facial hair too.  So I'll stat with that, then I'll actually deviate from what others are suggesting here. I use Lectric Shave. I get a very close shave using it. But don't apply it to your face a 2nd time to go against the grain, it stings like heck. My razor of choice is the Schick Hydro.

One thing I have noticed is good is leaving your razor in super hot water for a few minutes before you start, I assume because it helps to gooey up the moisturizing strip, if nothing else.

Hmmmmm..... :eusa_think:      In the 30 some years that I have been shaving
I always figured I was exfoliating as I was shaving but it does make sense to do it before also.
I'll have to give it a try. How do you do it?

In a sense you might be since your removing hair with a sharp blade and the softened up dead skin could come along lol.

but it's best to do beforehand.

I make my own exfoliator :D
which i really suggest

This video is amazeballs.
It shows you how to make it[it's super easy] and why its great.

I've never use the Head and Shoulders conditioner, so I can't comment on how good it is. However, I can say that finding a decent shampoo and conditioner which doesn't leave my hair either too dry or too greasy has been a veerry long road.... But I finally found something good: Aussie Moist Shampoo, and Aussie Moist conditioner!  :) If anyone out there has crazy hair like mine, try it—you'll probably love it, but use a clarifying shampoo too, every week or so; even though product buildup isn't really a problem with this shampoo and conditioner.

You guys are doing it wrong(!); seriously the ~best~ blade I've ever used (for the face at least; its not so good on the legs with all their curves and angles—you're likely to get nicked unless you have ninja shaving skillz) was an old-fashioned double-edge safety razor (Merkur makes some amazing razors). :P Go ahead, try one and tell me I'm wrong; I'll wait. Your skin will love it.

Edit: Omg I'm in Love with her voice...  And Mr. Bun Bun! Awesome vid Joey!

I actually prefer a straight-edge (or cut-throat) razor for my face.. Does require a steady hand though..

In my youth I shaved with a Straight Razor it was an awesomely close shave.
Somewhere between move #17 and #364, I lost the razor.
I bought another one but seeing we don't know how to make anything in this flickin' country anymore,
it was made in China and it rusted after the first time I used it.
I have serious hang-ups about shaving my throat with a rusty Straight Razor.

Update:

Using hair conditioner as a shave lubricant
has worked fantastically for me over the past few months.
I highly reccommend it!

This was probably the most helpful tip ever when I started shaving my body. It made things so much easier. I use Suave Coconut-scented, myself. It feels like heaven and it's got coconut oil, which is supposedly good for you.

Just one warning, stay away from citrus scents! One time when the store was out of Coconut, I bought some Mandarin Orange... It got the job done, but it was quite painful. The stuff started stinging from the moment I put the blade to my face.

Hey, just wanted to thank you. I've been using the 'classic clean' for over a week now and it's easily THE discovery of dare I say, yes I dare, the year. Life probably doesn't get any better than this. One thing though, I bought the '2 in 1' shampoo  and conditioner. Now, I'm a little fussy over this, but will I get even better results when I use JUST the conditioner? And exfoliating is basically just scrubbing, right? Or do you exfoliate your skin by scrubbing it? Or do SOME facial scrub creams have a exfoliating effect?

One tip to add maybe.. I have a very dry skin. After my skin comes in contact with water, it almost immediately gets pretty flaky. So it's really important that I put on some body lotion after I take a shower. Any body lotion works really, which is silly 'cause my face is super picky. The actual tip - if you have a really dry skin, 'Weleda' creams are a great addition to your facial products, if not a must. It restores the skin's moisture stability and afterwards your skin feels like it fed its belly with KFC and it's crying tears of joy. Though pretty expensive, it's totally worth the price. Oh, and it's ORGANIC.
